Men's Lacrosse Captures 2nd Annual Frostbite Classic 8-7 Over Mount Ida

MILTON, Mass.John O'Donnell (Middleton, Mass.) scored the game-winner with 1:02 remaining in regulation, as Curry defeated visiting Mount Ida, 8-7, in non-conference men’s lacrosse action Saturday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels and Mustangs were participating in the 2nd Annual Frostbite Classic, with Curry taking home the trophy for the second year in a row.

Mount Ida (0-1) dominated the first two quarters, building a 5-1 lead by halftime. The Mustangs kicked off the scoring at 13:20 of the opening frame on a goal by sophomore Niko Yacuzzi (Worcester, Mass.). Curry (1-1) tied the game a minute later on junior Russell Lanham’s first tally of the day, but the visitors netted the next four scores, provided by senior Paul Battipaglia (Clinton, Conn.), junior Zach Jacobson (Shoreview, Minn.), senior Derek Broughton (Peabody, Mass.) and Yacuzzi’s second of the half.

The hosts came storming back after intermission, eventually tying the contest, 6-6, at 3:29 of the third quarter on Lanham’s fourth and final goal of the afternoon. The Colonels then went ahead, 7-6, with just under seven minutes remaining when sophomore Joseph Natale (Haverhill, Mass.) picked up his third goal of the second half.

Senior Matt Savage (Peabody, Mass.) scored the equalizer for Mount Ida just over two minutes later, setting up O’Donnell’s heroics. The senior attacker managed to pick up the ball in front of the Mustangs’ goal and send a soft, one-hopper past sophomore net-minder Will Krach (Agawam, Mass.), who was attempting to clear the ball but could not get possession.

Curry’s Lanham (Silver Spring, Md.) led all scorers with five points (4g, 1a), while Broughton (2g, 1a) and Savage (1g, 2a) paced Mount Ida with three points apiece. Junior Michael Hibbard (North Chelmsford, Mass.) made 22 saves in picking up the win. Krach turned aside 10 shots in absorbing the loss.
