Two Curry College men's ice hockey players were named semi-finalists for the 24th annual Joe Concannon Award, announced by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston on Thursday afternoon.
The annual Joe Concannon Award was established in 2001 shortly after the passing of the longtime writer for The Boston Globe, who had a passion for college hockey while always advocating strongly for amateur athletics. This award is presented to the best American-born player in New England at the D-II/III level.
Sophomore goaltender Shane Soderwall and junior forward Killian Rowlee are among 40 other players up for the award. Soderwall maintains an 18-3 record on the season, with a total of 497 saves, 1.34 goals against average, and a .948 save percentage in 1,210 minutes of gameplay. Soderwall holds the record for most shutouts by a Curry ice hockey goalie with eight on the season and 13 in his career.
Rowlee has been a major component to the Colonels' success, scoring seven goals and dishing out eight assists for a total of 15 points so far this season. He has a +/- stat of +14 through 19 games played, helping the Colonels to lead the Conference of New England with a 19-3 overall record and a 13-2 record in conference.
The Colonels sit on top of the CNE standings with 40 points, three ahead of UNE and seven ahead of Endicott. The Colonels are set to face off against those teams this weekend in a pair of big games that will likely decide the winner of the regular season conference championship.
