Canton, MA - On a day where the Curry Men's Hockey team celebrated the past, the current Colonels showed what the future could hold, as they beat Johnson and Wales 5-1. The Colonels now sit at 15-3-0 on the season, and 9-2-0 in CNE play, while the Wildcats are 8-9-1 and 3-7-1. The Colonels are now on a seven-game win streak
Prior to the game the Colonels celebrated the 50th year anniversary of the Men's Hockey program at Curry. Alumni met with players prior to the game, and two players from the inaugural team in Wade Keats and Dominick Romano dropped the ceremonial first puck.
Despite the early festivities, the game did not start how the Colonels would have hoped. They gave up a goal at the eight-minute mark, falling behind just like they did on Friday. But they quickly rebounded, scoring twice in the final five and a half minutes of the period. First it was Karim Gayfullin off an assist from Ben Biester, followed by Alex Duncan knocking a loose puck home to put the Colonels up 2-1 at the first intermission.
Then in the second period the Colonels extended their lead. Nicolas Lariviere found Gage Dill with an outlet pass, and Dill rushed up ice to put it in the net. Just three minutes later the Colonels would extend their lead further, this time on the power play. George Vonakis won a faceoff clean back to Jesse Galassi, who whipped it across to Cole Weigner, who fired the puck into the net. The Colonels would get one more goal, again on the power play, this one coming from Eelis Laaksonen, who scored his team high 13th goal with two minutes left in the game.
The Colonels controlled the game, outshooting the Wildcats 41-9, and winning 37 of the 59 faceoffs. Laaksonen was the star of the draws, winning 19 of 24.
Shane Soderwall was alone on his end of the ice for a majority of the game, needing to only make eight saves in the game. This marked the 10th time in 17 games this season where he has allowed one or fewer goals.
Up Next - The Colonels will return to the ice on Friday when they host Suffolk for their Hockey Fights Cancer game, with that game starting at 7pm.
