Canton, MA - The Curry Men's Hockey team fell in their CNE opener to Endicott on Friday, losing 3-2 in overtime. The Colonels are now 2-1-0 on the season, and 0-1-0 in CNE play, while the Gulls are 1-1-0 and 1-0-0.
The two teams went through a feeling out process in the first period, with Curry edging the Gulls in shots 10-8. The action began to pick up in the second, starting just a minute into the period. The Gulls had a two-on-one, and Primo Self was able to put them up 1-0. But the Colonels would respond just five minutes later. With just seconds remaining on a Curry power play, the Gulls thought they had successfully cleared the puck down the ice, and began a line change. But seeing an opportunity, Curry goalie Shane Soderwall came up out of his net and fired a pass to a streaking Manny Cabral, who deked the goalie, and scored on his second effort. The assist from Soderwall was the first assist by a Curry goalie since Reid Cooper had two in one game against Salve Regina on 2/3/2023.
The two teams would play a fast-paced game the rest of the second period, and the Colonels would grab a lead with about three minutes remaining in the period. Eelis Laaksonen won a faceoff to the left of the goalie, Casper Soderling collected it, and dished it to Matt Connor, who fired home the goal. This was also on the power play, giving the Colonels two power play goals.
It would stay 2-1 until eight minutes into the third period, when the Gulls found an equalizer. The Colonels thought they had a go-ahead goal with three minutes left, but the officials ruled that the Colonels had kicked the puck in. With the goal disallowed, the game would go to overtime.
The Colonels began the OT period on the powerplay due to a holding penalty by the Gulls as time expired in regulation, and they nearly took advantage. Casper Soderling had a chance at an open net during the advantage, but his shot pinged off the post, and bounced right into the Endicott goalie. With about 90 seconds left in the game, the Gulls would score on a breakaway goal by Domenic Garozzo, giving them the win.
The Colonels had the shot advantage at 35-27, but the Gulls held a slight faceoff advantage at 35-33. Shane Soderwall made 24 saves for the Colonels in net.
Up Next - The two teams will be back at it on Saturday at Endicott. That game will begin at 5pm.
