Canton, MA - The Curry Colonels hosted their first home game of the season on Saturday, and they defeated Norwich 3-0. The Colonels are now 2-0-0 on the season, while the Cadets are 0-1-0.
The Colonels controlled the game from the get-go, outshooting the Cadets 19-7 in the first period. While the Norwich goalie was able to keep the Colonels out of the net for a majority of the period, Curry finally broke through with just over two minutes left in the first period when Casper Soderling found Eelis Laaksonen, who fired the puck into the net for his second goal of the season. That gave Curry a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.
It was early in the second period that the Colonels doubled their lead, this time on the power play. It was once again Soderling on the assist, this time teaming up with George Vonakis to set up Killian Rowlee, who found the back of the net from the left slot. Vonakis would pick up another assist with just over a minute remaining in the second period when Nolan McDonough scored. Ryan Prewitt also had an assist on that goal. With no goals scored in the third period, the Colonels cruised to a 3-0 win.
Shane Soderwall once again showed why he is arguably the best goalie in the country, stopping all 25 shots he faced, picking up his second consecutive shutout. A sophomore who didn't take over the full-time starting position until midseason last year, Soderwall has now posted a shutout in seven of his 20 career starts
Soderwall becomes the first Colonel goalie to post back-to-back shutouts since Andrew Lisi did it in November 2006. Lisi made 38 saves across his two games, compared to Soderwall's 53. November 2006 was also the last time Curry as a team shutout their opponent in consecutive games, with the Colonels posting three straight shutouts in 2006. In between Lisi's two shutouts was a shutout by Zachary Cardella.
Up Next - In what could be a CNE Championship preview, the Colonels will host the only team that was voted ahead of them in the CNE pre-season poll, the Endicott Gulls. That game will take place on Friday at 7pm.
