Boston, MA - The Curry Men's Hockey started their season off with a 2-0 win over UMass Boston on Friday. This was the third straight season the Colonels opened their season against the Beacons.

After an even first period that saw the Beacons edge the Colonels in shots 10-8, the Colonels controlled the second period, outshooting UMB 15-6. But neither team would get on the board until early in the third quarter. Karim Gayfullin put the Colonels on top with his first career goal just over five minutes into the final period. The Colonels would then get a goal from Eelis Laaksonen, assisted by Manny Cabral. Those two goals would be enough to give the Colonels the 2-0 win.

Laaksonen will be a player to watch this season, as he makes a march towards 100 career points. With tonight's goal he sits at 73 career points, and if he matches his total of 28 from last year, he would hit 100 exactly.

Another player to watch all season will be goalie Shane Soderwall. In his last outing of last season, he tied an NCAA record with 98 saves in a game. He picked up where he left off, stopping all 29 shots he faced for his first shutout of the year. After five shutouts last year, Soderwall, still just a sophomore, has six career shutouts, second most in program history. He only trails Lenny Mosca, who had 10 shutouts from 2002 to 2006.

Up Next - The Colonels will host their home opener on Saturday when they take on Norwich at 4pm.
