CANTON, Mass. - The #6 Curry College men's ice hockey team knocked off third-ranked Endicott College 3-2 on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at the Canton Ice House.
With the victory, Curry finishes the regular season with a mark of 20-4-1 and 16-4-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The loss snaps Endicott's unbeaten streak at 21 games.
Prior to puck drop, Curry honored six members of the Class of 2023, who were playing in their final regular season game at the Canton Ice House. Seniors and graduate students Billy Roche (Braintree, Mass.), Reid Cooper (Corman Park, Saskatchewan), Tarek Paranica (Grand Forks, N.D.), Mark Zhukov (St. Petersburg, Russia), Nick Favaro (Vaughan, Ontario), and Austin Whelan (Richmond Hill, Ontario) were joined on the ice by their friends and families for the pre-game ceremony.
Once the contest got under way, the Colonels came out flying. Just 2:25 into the game, a Jacob Crespo (Mount Holly, N.J.) point shot pinballed into the back of the net to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes later, defenseman Matt Connor (Nottingham, N.H.) wristed one past the Gull netminder off a feed from George Vonakis (Abingdon, Md.) to stretch Curry's lead to 2-0 less than five minutes into the game.
Endicott answered with a goal of their own with exactly four minutes remaining in the first, but Curry got it right back 54 seconds later. Roche netted a power play goal on a back door feed from sophomore Eelis Laaksonen (Espoo, Finland), giving Curry a 3-1 lead after one period.
Endicott made things interesting midway through the third when they scored a 4-on-4 marker, but Curry did not concede the equalizer to close out the 3-2 victory.
Cooper turned away 33 of the 35 shots he faced to earn his 18th victory of the season.
Curry now advances to the CCC Tournament and, as the two-seed, receives a bye into the semifinals on Saturday. The time and opponent are to be determined.
