Men's Ice Hockey Knocks Off #8 Norwich to Claim Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tourney Championship

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Curry College men's ice hockey team scored three third period goals to slide past #8 Norwich University 3-1 on Saturday evening in the Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament championship game at Kreitzburg Arena.

With the victory, Curry improves to 9-2-0 overall on the season and picks up its second win against a team ranked in the top-10 nationally in the USCHO.com poll.

The only goal of the opening 40 minutes of the contest came off a Cadet stick, as Clark Kerner opened the scoring at the 15:31 mark of the second period on the power play. The goal put the hosts ahead 1-0 heading to the third period.

Just over five minutes into the third, senior Timmy Kent (Parkland, Fla.) found the equalizer for the Colonels with a power play goal. Assists on Kent's sixth goal of the season were credited to Taurin Haddon-Harris (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Mark Zhukov (St. Petersburg, Russia).

Ninety-two seconds after the Colonels tied the game, freshman Gage Dill (Estero, Fla.) gave the guests the lead with another power play goal. The rookie walked off the half boards into the slot and ripped a snap shot over the blocker side of the Cadet netminder to put Curry on top 2-1. Assisting on the eventual game-winner were Zhukov and senior Nick Favaro (Vaughan, Ontario).

The score held until the final minute, when Zhukov put the game on ice with an empty-net tally. Ben Biester (Danville, Calif.) notched an assist on the play.

Between the pipes, graduate student Reid Cooper (Corman Park, Saskatchewan) stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced to earn his ninth victory of the season.

After the game, Dill was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player with three goals and one assist for four points over two games. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Cooper and defenseman Matt Connor (Nottingham, N.H.).

The Colonels will return to the ice on Friday evening, hosting Anna Maria College at the Canton Ice House at 7 p.m.
