CANTON, Mass. - The #14 Curry College men's ice hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to Western New England University in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Canton Ice House.
With the defeat, Curry suffers its first regulation loss of the season, and falls to 5-2-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the CCC.
Neither team found the net until late in the second period, when Western New England's Shane Miller broke the ice with 5:01 to play in the frame. The goal held up as the only tally of the period, and the teams went to the third with the Golden Bears ahead 1-0.
Early in the third, Curry scored twice in a span of 1:49 to claim a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Eelis Laaksonen (Espoo, Finland) tied the score at 1-1 just over two minutes into the third, before graduate student Billy Roche (Braintree, Mass.) scored his first goal as a Colonel to put Curry ahead with 16 minutes to play.
Western New England refused to go down quietly however, and Curry's lead only lasted for just over four minutes. Billy Hefferle netted a power play goal for the Golden Bears to tie the score, before John D'Aniello scored with 6:10 to play to give the visitors the lead for good.
Between the pipes, graduate netminder Reid Cooper (Corman Park, Saskatchewan) took the loss. He made 16 saves for the Colonels in the defeat.
Curry will be off for two weeks before returning to the ice on December 3 against Salve Regina University at the Canton Ice House. Puck drop is slated for 3 p.m.
