Colonels Ground Gulls in Thrilling Conference Bout

CANTON, Mass. - The 13th nationally ranked Curry College Men's Ice Hockey team grabbed a 2-1 victory over the 8th nationally ranked Endicott Gulls at the Canton Ice House Friday evening.

With the win at home, the Colonels stay undefeated and hold a record of 8-0-1 overall and 6-0-1 in the CCC. The Gulls face their second loss of the season, now sitting at 6-2-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the CCC.

The Colonels were quick on the draw with a shot from senior Alex Ochterbeck (Plano, Texas) finding the back of the net just over a minute and a half into the contest, sending a flurry of teddy bears onto the ice ringing in the Colonel's 7th annual Teddy Bear Toss. Ochterbeck's goal was assisted by junior forward Timmy Kent (Parkland, Fla.) and junior Nicholas Favaro (Vaughan, Ont.). The Colonels would only hold that lead for under two minutes when a deflection in front of the Curry net grants Endicott junior Derek Contessa an opportunity to tie the contest up. Contessa screams a shot by Curry's Polasek to square the contest 1-1. The first period would conclude with the score locked up.

The two sides were seemingly at a stalemate until the Colonels gained momentum after winning a faceoff in the Gulls' defensive zone propelling the puck up top to sophomore forward Nolan Dawson (Rocky View County, Alta.) who buried his first collegiate goal. Curry's Austin Whelan (Richmond Hill, Ont.) assisted on the play as Nicholas Favaro recorded his second of the contest. The Colonel's goal midway through the second period would send both teams into the intermission with the score 2-1 in favor of the hosts.

Endicott amplified their intensity in the final period of play, recording 14 shots to Curry's 7. Colonel's goaltender Roland Polasek (Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic) made all the difference for the hosts blocking each and every attempt presented by the Gulls in a stunning fashion down to the final seconds in the night's matchup. Polasek totaled 34 saves on 35 shots faced in the win for the Colonels.

Gulls goaltender Conor O'Brien tallied 27 saves on 29 shots in their loss at the Canton Ice House.

The Colonels look to continue their unbeaten streak as they turn around and face the Gulls away in Beverly, Mass. at the Raymond J. Bourque Arena Saturday at 3 PM.
