Men's Ice Hockey Glides Past Nichols

HARRISVILLE, R.I. - The Curry College men's ice hockey team secured a 6-2 victory over Nichols College on Friday evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at Levy Rink.

With the win, Curry improves to 6-0-1 overall on the season and 4-0-1 in the CCC. 

Curry scored a pair of goals in all three periods, and six different Colonels found the back of the net in the victory. Junior Austin Whelan (Richmond Hill, Ontario) opened the scoring just 2:30 in an assist from Eelis Laaksonen (Oulu, Finland). Curry bookended the period with a goal with 30 seconds left until the horn when senior Alex Ochterbeck (Plano, Texas) scored on the power play to put Curry ahead 2-0 after one. Timmy Kent (Parkland, Fla.) and Kalle Sundell (Helsinki, Finland) were credited with helpers on the goal. 

Nichols got on the board just under four minutes into the second, but Kent responded with a tally of his own just 26 seconds later at the 4:20 mark to put Curry back ahead by two. Nichols' Nathan Carl and Curry's Sundell traded goals later in the second period as Curry went to the locker room ahead 4-2 after 40 minutes.

Mark Zhukov (St. Petersburg, Russia) and Nicholas Favaro (Vaughan, Ontario) found the net in the third period for insurance markers to give the game its final score of 6-2.

Curry held a heavy advantage in the shot count, outshooting the Bison 51-14. Curry netminder Roland Polasek (Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic) turned aside 12 of Nichols' 14 shots to earn his second win of the season.

The teams will meet again on Saturday afternoon for a 3 p.m. puck drop at the Canton Ice House.
