Hockey Rallies Past Western New England in High-Scoring Affair

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Curry College men's ice hockey team netted three goals in the final period to rally past Western New England University in an 8-5 final on Saturday night at the Olympia Ice Center in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.

The first period featured seven total goals as the Golden Bears held a 4-3 lead after one. Junior Tyler Lindstrom (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) picked up the first tally 2:29 into the frame off of assists from junior Tristan Morin (Unionville, Conn.) and junior Eetu Selanne (Coto de Caza, Calif.). Western New England found the equalizer over eight minutes later on power play strike by freshman Tyler Pohlig (Broomall, Pa.). The home squad added another 41 seconds after on a goal from junior Luciano Bucci (Franklin Square, N.Y.). The Colonels deposited back-to-back markers, one on the power play and the other at even strength. Junior Joseph Thielen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) had the first in the span while and senior Billy Vizzo (Shelton, Conn.) made the score 3-2. The Golden Bears answered back with two of its own to close the period. Junior Nolan Zweep (Abbotsford, B.C.) put a shot past sophomore goaltender Vladimir Cibulka (Bratislava, Slovakia) on the power play and sophomore Connor Geshan (Oakton, Va.) followed with a goal with 2:44 left.

Curry outscored Western New England 2-1 in the second period as the contest would enter the final 20 minutes knotted at five. Vizzo and sophomore Alex Ochterbeck (Dallas, Texas) scored for the Colonels while senior Corey Kennedy (Clemmons, N.C.) cashed in a marker in the middle frame.

Curry pulled away in the third with a trio of goals. Thielen, Selanne, and junior Michael Snow (Medford, Mass.) all scored in the final period to give the Colonels the three-goal victory.

Curry held a 55-19 advantage in shots. The Colonels went 3-for-4 on the power play while the Golden Bears finished 3-for-9.

Junior goaltender Cody Murch (Raleigh, N.C.) was credited with the victory after playing the final two periods and making nine saves. Senior Kyle Carducci (Rocky Hill, Conn.) was given the loss while making 47 stops. 

Curry (14-4-3 overall, 9-3-2 CCC) will next host Salve Regina University on Friday, February 14 at 6:50 p.m. Western New England (3-15-2 overall, 1-12-1 CCC) welcomes in the University of New England on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
