Hockey Salvages 2-2 Tie With Nichols in League Play

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's ice hockey team salvaged a 2-2 tie with visiting Nichols College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest Friday night at Max Ulin Rink.

With the draw, the Colonels sit at 10-6-3 overall and 5-4-2 in the CCC. The Bison move to 10-7-2 overall and 8-2-1 in league play.

The first period featured no scoring for either side. Nichols held a 16-11 advantage in shots in the frame but neither team was able to find the back of the net.

The Bison broke the scoreless game with a goal at the 13:00 mark of the second on a marker from freshman Kyle MacDonald (Williston, Vt.). The assists on the tally were awarded to freshmen Brady Valiquette (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Noah Poindexter (Grand Rapids, Mich.) as Nichols claimed the 1-0 lead.

Curry answered back with the equalizer 4:15 into the third period to knot the game at one. Junior Billy Vizzo (Shelton, Conn.) notched his sixth goal in the last seven games since joining the Colonels. Freshman Tarek Paranica (Grand Forks, N.D.) and sophomore Tyler Lindstrom (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) registered assists on the goal.

The Colonels then grabbed the lead at the 11:48 mark of the final frame. Freshman Mic Curran (Arlington, Mass.) capitalized on a power-play opportunity off setup passes from Vizzo and sophomore Viktor Jansson (Stockholm, Sweden).

Almost three minutes later, the Bison found the back of the net with the goal going to senior Ian Spencer (Hawthorne, N.J.) to deadlock the score at two. The score came on the power-play and was assisted by juniors Vincent Crivello (Rosemere, Quebec) and J.B. Baker (Columbia, Md.).

The game eventually went to overtime, which saw Nichols hold a 2-0 shot advantage. Neither team could break the tie as the contest ended in a 2-2 draw.

Curry held a 34-31 edge in shots for the contest. Both teams tallied a power-play goal each. The Colonels finished the night 1-for-5 while the Bison were 1-for-3.

Colonels' junior goaltender Justin Ketola (Cloquet, Minn.) registered 29 saves on 31 shots while Nichols' netminder, sophomore Henry Burns (Camillus, N.Y.) made 32 saves on 34 shots.

Curry will complete its home-and-home series with Nichols on Saturday, January 26 at 4:40 p.m. at Levy Rink in Harrisville, R.I.
