Hockey Tops Visiting Plymouth State in Non-Conference Action, 4-1

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's ice hockey team topped visiting Plymouth State University by a 4-1 final on Tuesday night at Max Ulin Rink in non-league action. The win moves the Colonels to 7-5-2 overall while the Panthers fall to 8-3-2.

Curry was the first to strike in the contest as senior assistant captain Lionel Mauron (Lausanne, Switzerland) found the back of the net just 2:41 in to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead. The assists on the marker went to freshman Levi Johnson (Vernon, B.C.) and junior Billy Vizzo (Shelton, Conn.). Curry held an 11-6 advantage in shots in the first period. Sophomore goalie Cody Murch (Raleigh, N.C.) converted six saves for the Colonels in the frame.

The squads traded goals in the middle period, but it was still Curry leading 2-1 with one stanza to go. Plymouth State scored the equalizer 5:48 into the period as junior Victor Bergstrom (Angelholm, Sweden) capitalized on a power play opportunity. Seniors Tim Perron (Northborough, Mass.) and Matt Volonnino (Hackettstown, N.J.) were awarded assists on the marker. Curry broke the tie with 32 seconds left after sophomore Viktor Jansson (Stockholm, Sweden) put a shot past Panthers senior goalie Evan Morelli (Reading, Mass.). The helper on the goal went to freshman Mic Curran (Arlington, Mass.).

The Colonels would put the game away in the final period, tallying two goals in the last six minutes of regulation. Vizzo notched his second goal in as many games off assists from Mauron and Anthony Trujillo (Toronto, Ontario). Senior captain Zach White (Milford, Conn.) added the insurance tally with 1:16 remaining in regulation with an empty net goal to give Curry the 4-1 victory.

The Colonels held a commanding 42-25 advantage in shots. Both teams converted once on the power play with Curry going 1-for-3 and Plymouth State going 1-for-2.

Murch made 24 stops in between the pipes for the Colonels. Morelli registered 41 saves on the night.

Curry returns to the ice on Saturday, January 12 at home against Bryn Athyn College at 4:50 p.m. Plymouth State will next play on Thursday, January 10 at home against Fitchburg State at 6:00 p.m.
