MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's hockey team defeated Suffolk University, 6-2, in ECAC Northeast action on Thursday evening at the Max Ulin Rink in Milton, Mass. With the win, the Colonels improve to 8-11-2 overall and 4-7-2 in conference play. The loss drops the Rams to 12-6-2 on the season and 7-3-2 in the conference.
After a scoreless first period, the teams each posted two goals to head into the third tied at 2-2. Suffolk was first to get on the board at the 16:23-minute mark. Freshman Mikhail Bryan (Dayton, Ohio) netted the tie-breaker with assists from junior Simon Leahy (Milwaukee, Wis.) and senior Tyler Heineman (Randolph, N.J.) Just three minutes later the Colonels responded with a goal from junior Justin Nice (Aurora, Ontario) via sophomore Shane Tracy (Bow, N.H.) while being shorthanded to tie up the score yet again.
Mere seconds after Nice netted one, the Rams responded with freshman Connor Parent (Danvers, Mass.) scoring one to take the lead with passes from senior Shaughn Shields (Anchorage, Alaska) and junior Stanton Turner (San Francisco, Calif.). However, that would be the last goal they would score. Curry scored the next four goals in the game starting with freshman Hector Majul (Mexico City, Mexico) setting up classmate Mack Heisinger (Winnipeg, Manitoba) to tie up the score heading into the third.
Despite only recording two shots on goal during the period, the Colonels held a tie with the conference foe. Two and a half minutes into the final frame, senior Shane Harrington (Mansfield, Mass.) netted his fifth of the season on a power play with an assist from sophomore Phil Kiss (Burlington, Ontario) for his fourth of the season. Twenty seconds later Heisinger scored his second of the night with assists from freshman Zach White (Milford, Conn.) and sophomore Adam DiBrina (Sudbury, Ontario) to put Curry up by a score of 4-2.
Junior James Murphy (Malden, Mass.) recorded his seventh assist on the season on junior Tyler Vankleef's eleventh goal of the season. Junior Dan McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.) scored one last time unassisted with only 1:49 left to play.
Curry went 1-5 on power plays while Suffolk was 0-6. The Colonels outshot the Rams 15-14.
Sinclair made 12 saves in net for the Colonels in the winning effort while Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mich.) had 9 stops in net for Suffolk in the loss.
Curry is back in action on Saturday, February 6 when they host Western New England University for a conference match-up. The Rams return to action on their senior night as they host conference foe Wentworth Institute of Technology at 7 p.m.
