SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 19, 2015) – Curry got goals from six different players as they earned their first victory of the season with a 6-1 win this evening in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast action at Smead Arena.
Western New England drops to 0-6 (0-4 ECAC NE) with the setback, while Curry improves to 1-5-1 and 1-3-1 in conference play.
The Colonels wasted no time as they netted their first score just 1:48 into the first period. Sophomore Shane Tracy (Bow, N.H.) beat Western New England senior goaltender Austin Keiser (Danwoody, Ga.) top shelf to stake the Rams to an early 1-0 advantage off an assist by junior Jake Heisinger (Winnipeg, Manitoba). Freshman Lionel Mauron (Lausanne, Switzerland) helped on sophomore Robert Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) game-winning tally at the 12:32 minute mark. Curry extended their lead to 3-0 just under two minutes later after junior Dan McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.) took a slap shot that sailed over the shoulder of Keiser. McGinnis was set up by senior Shane Harrington (Mansfield, Mass.) and junior Justin Nice (Aurora, Ontario). The Colonels freshman goaltender Spencer Cookson (Sheffield, Mass.) was solid between the pipes stopping seven Golden Bears shots.
Curry earned another two goals in the second period outshooting Western New England, 9-5 and holding them scoreless. After a Golden Bear penalty midway through the stanza, the Colonels took advantage netting a power-play score. 42 seconds into the man-up advantage, junior Sean Nelson (Brighton, Mich.) and freshman Mack Heigsinger (Winnipeg, Manitoba) were credited with assists when they set up sophomore Adam Valadao (Ajax, Ontario). Western New England replaced Keiser in net with freshman netminder Cole Semchak (Bakersfield, Calif.). Valadao one-timed the puck past the glove of Semchak to go-ahead 4-0. With 1:45 showing on the clock, Jake Heisinger earned his second point on the night after collecting a rebound in front of the net sending the puck low into the back corner. Junior Mike Apreda (Newmarket, Ontario) was awarded the assist.
Curry netted their sixth score at 14:17 in the final period looking for a shutout victory but Western New England got on the board a minute later for their lone goal of the game. Junior Tyler Vankleef (Dundas, Ontario) received the puck from classmate Joe Scarfo (Winthrop, Mass.) sending a shot past Semchak. Cookson held the Golden Bears scoreless through 44:48 minutes of play before giving up a goal to freshman CJ Totillo (Brooklyn, N.Y.) for his first collegiate goal. Totillo was assisted by classmate and former junior's teammate David Kleyman (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
Curry outshot Western New England by a 29-19 margin, and converted on one of its five chances with a man advantage. Keiser made five saves between the pipes for the Golden Bears before giving way to Semchak who had 18 stops, while Cookson had 18 on the other end.
Both Western New England and Curry will be back in action on Saturday, as the Rams are scheduled to travel to Salve Regina and the Colonels host Nichols. (Game Recap Courtesy of Western New England Sports Information)
