NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Connecticut College men’s hockey team erupted with two scores in a span of 2:58 in the third period and held on for a 4-2 victory against visiting Curry College in a non-conference game played at Dayton Arena Wednesday.
The Camels improve their record to 3-7-1 with the triumph, while the Colonels slip to 7-3 in the setback.
Senior Sean Curran (Wilmette, Ill.) continues to pile up the points. The senior co-captain sandwiched a goal around two assists. Curran leads the New England Small College Athletic Conference with 14 assists.
JC Cangelosi (Estero, Fla.) chipped in with a goal and an assist. J.J. McGregor (Wichita, Kan.) tallied two assists. Senior co-captain Lucas Chavira Schramm (Phoenix, Ariz.) scored the eventual game-winner from the right point with 5:36 remaining in regulation.
Curry College senior forward Payden Benning (Estevan, Sasketchewan) accounted for the visitors’ offense, potting goal #12 and 13 for the Colonels.
Senior forward John Williams (Flourtown, Pa.) assisted on both goals.
Connecticut College senior net-minder Andrew Margolin (Mahwah, N.J.) collected 14 of his 31 saves in the third period to earn the victory for the hosts.
Junior Joe Dawson (Woodbury, Minn.) finished with 27 saves in the loss for Curry.
Benning buried a power play goal with 6:30 remaining to tie the game at 2-2. However, the Camels responded less than a minute later when Cangelosi and Curran assisted Schramm for the score that put the Camels on top for good.
Later on with 2:38 to go, Cangelosi broke into the scoring column, finishing in an odd man rush with Curran and McGregor providing the assistance.
Margolin took care of the rest, denying the visitors any further opportunities to get back into the contest with some stellar play in the goal.
Benning opened the scoring for Curry with a goal at 2:29 of the second period. But the Camels scored the next two goals to pull ahead.
Mike Martinez (Orchard Park, N.Y.) supplied the equalizer just 33 seconds later. Will Einstein (New Canaan, Conn.) and Zach Jones (Gibsonia, Pa.) assisted on the marker.
Later on in the second, Curran netted his third goal of the season on the power play in 2-on-1 situation against Dawson. Curran and Julien Boutet (Amos, Quebec) broke free and were joined by McGregor in the odd man rush. (Game Recap Courtesy of Connecticut College Sports Information)
