Hockey Captures 5-3 Victory Over Visiting Salve Regina University

MILTON, Mass.- Curry College defeated Salve Regina University 5-3, in men's ice hockey action on Saturday night in Milton, Mass.  The Colonels improve to 7-7-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the ECAC Northeast, while the Seahawks fall to 1-13-1 and 1-5-0 in the ECAC Northeast.

The Colonels were the first to get on the board in the opening frame just one minute into the game.  Junior Ryan Barlock (Niles, IL) took a shot from the blue line off assists from juniors Shane Geib (Stony Plain, AB) and Christopher Atkinson (Sparta, NJ).  Salve tied the game at 5:54 when freshman Trey Rasmussen (Vinyard Haven, MA) beat a Curry defender and sent a pass to sophomore Jacob Hutt (Menlo Park, CA) who was open in front of the net.  Hutt one-timed the pass for his first goal of the night.  The Seahawks took the 2-1 lead after senior Joe Colaianni (Monroe, NY) took advantage of a power play and shot the puck in the upper right side of the net past sophomore goaltender Robert Dawson(Woodbury, MN).

Barlock scored his second goal to tie the game at two a piece at the 6:14 minute mark of the second period.  Salve was called for tripping and with just 16 seconds into the power play, Barlock chipped in the puck past Salve’s goaltender, freshman Jean-Christophe Turgeon (Sherbrooke, Quebec).  Senior Ryan Warsofsky (Marshfield, MA) and sophomore Brett Kaneshiro (Laguna Niguel, CA) were credited with the assists.  The Seahawks regained the lead two minutes later when Hutt scored his second goal of the night.  Hutt was assisted by Colaianni. 

The Colonels went on to score three unanswered goals for the 5-3 win.  Two of the three goals were scored in the second period.  Kaneshiro scored on another power play opportunity when he received a pass from junior Payden Benning (Estevan, SK).  Senior Ray Nicks (Surrey, BC) scored an unassisted goal just three minutes later which proved to be the game-winner.  Curry’s fifth goal was scored on an empty net by freshman Andrew Tate (Canton, MI) with just 48 seconds to play.  Despite Salve outshooting Curry 16-5 in the third period, solid play by sophomore goaltender Travis Owens (Burbank, CA) kept the Seahawks scoreless in the final period.

Salve’s Turgeon made 30 total saves in net for the loss. Curry’s goaltender Dawson made four saves allowing two goals in 20 minutes.  Owens made 20 saves in 40 minutes allowing just one goal for the win. 

Curry's next game is at home on Tuesday, January 25 at 7:35 p.m. against Babson College.  Salve hosts Wentworth on Thursday, January 27 for a 6:45 p.m. start.
