MILTON, Mass. - Curry College men's basketball defeated Elms College 70-69 with a game-winning three-pointer to pick up its first win of the season on Thursday night at Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium.
With the win, the Colonels improve to an overall record of 1-4 on the young season.
After trailing by as many as 15 points in the first half, the Colonels mounted a comeback led by freshman Jaiden Mann who went a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc to give the Colonels 15 points. Carl Monplaisir was another major contributor with 10 first-half points on 4-for-6 shooting from the field. Mann punctuated the comeback with a late three to tie the score at 35-35 at the end of the half.
Shawn Charles threw down a dunk to set the tone of the second half and give the Colonels a slight advantage that they held for most of the second until Elms took a 67-63 lead with only 32 seconds remaining in the half. A quick layup and later a dunk by Mann put the Colonels within one point of the lead. Shortly after, an intentional foul by the Colonels' defense set the Blazers at the line, missing one out of the two free throws to give the visitors a 69-67 lead with five seconds remaining. Curry inbounded the ball to Mann who dribbled down the court and knocked down a long three to give the game its final score of 70-69 with just half a second remaining on the game clock.
Mann led all scorers with 25 points on 9-for-14 shooting while going 4-for-6 from behind the arc while grabbing eight boards and two blocks. Monplaisir had a major impact off the bench with 20 points and eight rebounds while Charles was one rebound away from a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Curry College returns to action on Monday, November 25th, when it hosts UMass Boston. Tipoff set for 6 p.m.
