Men's Basketball Toppled by Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Curry College men's basketball team was tripped up by Salve Regina University 76-71 Tuesday evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at the Rodgers Athletic Center.

With the defeat, the Colonels drop to 2-9 overall on the season and 0-4 in CCC play.

The two teams kept in close in the opening 20 minutes of play, which saw the Seahawks head to the locker room ahead by a narrow 34-31 margin. Curry senior guard Angelo Sardegna (Tampa, Fla.) matched a game-high of 11 points in the half, while junior Lowelle Torres (Vineland, N.J.) notched 10. The period featured four ties and four lead changes.

Curry got to within one early in the second half, but could not get any closer as Salve Regina surged ahead. Curry made things interesting in the final minutes, cutting the score to within two possessions, but ran out of time in its comeback bid as the game ended 76-71.

Sardegna closed the contest as Curry's leading scorer with 19 points, while Torres and junior Frankie Santiago Jr. (New Britain, Conn.) finished with 12 and 11 points respectively. Freshman Jason Romans (Peabody, Mass.) had a strong all around game for the visitors, recording nine points with six steals, six rebounds, and three assists.

Next up for the Colonels, they will return home to host the University of New England at Katz Gymnasium on Thursday evening. Tipoff between the Nor'easters and Colonels is slated for 7 p.m.
