Colonels Come From Behind, Down Lesley University

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College men's basketball team was victorious over non-conference opponent Lesley University Thursday evening at Katz Gymnasium by a score of 89-67.

With the win, the Colonels improve to 2-7 overall on the season and remain at 1-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. With the loss on the road, the Lesley University Lynx falls to 2-9 on the season.

The Lynx took a quick seven-point lead within the first two minutes of play with a bucket from beyond the arc by Marco Powells and fast-break layups from Michael Langford and Gabe McCray. Colonel's sophomore Lowelle Torres (Vineland, N.J.) put his side on the board with a basket from the field. However, two threes from Davion Fields gave Lesley an 11-point lead just five minutes into the first half.

A retaliation by the Curry College side prompted a timeout from the Lynx. Following the brief intermission, the Lynx grabbed 7 more points while only allowing one on the inverse. Solid zone defense from the visitors opposed any interior threats from the Colonels. Junior guard Nick Johnson (Athens, Ga.) knocked down a three-pointer to get his side back into the action. A layup and three free throws from sophomore JayQuan Leonard (Plymouth, Mass.) paired with a field goal from sophomore guard Nick Sachetti (North Kingstown, R.I.) brought the Colonels within 10 points with under five minutes remaining in the half. A 14-3 run from the Colonels capped off with a pull-up jumper from sophomore guard Frankie Santiago (New Britain, Conn.) sent both teams into halftime with a score of 37-35 in favor of the visiting Lynx.

The second half began with a flurry of turnovers from both teams. A three-pointer from junior guard Angelo Sardegna (Tampa, Fla.) and a JayQuan Leonard layup tied the contest at 39. Lesley's Davion Fields knocked down a three shortly after, taking back the lead. Both sides went shot for shot through the first eight minutes of the second half with the Colonels taking a slight lead at 60-54. A layup from sophomore Sante Smith (Norfolk, Va.) resulting in a three-point opportunity granted the Colonels their largest lead of the night; 63-54 with under 10 minutes remaining. A commanding 21-4 run from the Colonels would cushion their lead late in the contest. The Colonels would defend their lead from any substantial attacking efforts, closing out the game with a score of 89-67.

The Colonels recorded 49.7% (35-73) from the field while the visitors tallied 34.7% (25-72). An impressive 30 points from fastbreaks in the matchup gave Curry the edge and momentum deep into regulation.

Curry was led by sophomore guard JayQuan Leonard who tallied 13 points in the win. Forward Lowelle Torres recorded 12 points and 7 rebounds as Todd Robinson saw 12 points as well.

The visiting Lynx were led by Kyle Murphy who marked 15 points and 8 rebounds in the loss and Davion Fields who dropped 13 points.

The Colonels head back out on the court Monday as they hit the road to face the Anchormen of Rhode Island College in non-conference play. Tip-off is set for 6 PM.
