Men's Basketball Falls Short to Dean in Season Opener

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College men's basketball team dropped its 2021-22 season opener 85-73 to Dean College on Tuesday evening in non-conference action at the Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium.

With the loss, Curry opens its season at 0-1 overall.

Curry trailed by as many as 15 points in the early stages of the second half, but a 9-0 run late in the contest helped the hosts cut the deficit to as little as three at 70-67 on a Frankie Santiago (New Britain, Conn.) layup with 4:20 remaining. Dean however responded with 15 of the contest's final 21 points to close out the victory.

Four Curry starters opened the season in double figures, led by sophomore guard JayQuan Leonard (Plymouth, Mass.) with 14 points. Classmate Todd Robinson Jr. (Brockton, Mass.) was just behind Leonard with 13 points, while Santiago and Angelo Sardegna (Tampa, Fla.) each finished with 10 points.

Coming off the bench, Sante Smith (Norfolk, Va.) notched nine points, while Nick Johnson (Athens, Ga.) put up seven points and a team-high six rebounds.

Dean's Hunter Meyer and Mark Blair each finished with 23 points to lead all players in the win.

Curry will return to the hardwood in less than 24 hours, traveling to Framingham State on Wednesday for their first road game of the season. Tip-off from Framingham is slated for 5:30 p.m.
