Men's Basketball Earns Record-Tying 18th Win, Knocking Off Visiting Wentworth, 73-61

MILTON, Mass. – Senior Sedale Jones (Pittsfield, Mass.) scored a game-high 23 points to lead Curry College past visiting Wentworth, 73-61, on Senior Day in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men’s basketball contest Saturday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels conclude the regular season with an 18-7 overall record and 15-3 mark in the CCC, while the Leopards finish at 15-10 overall and 11-7 in league play. Curry will enter the playoffs as the number one seed, while Wentworth takes the third spot.

Curry’s victory over Wentworth also tied the school record for the most wins in a season (18).

The Colonels opened the first half on a 12-4 run to take an early edge. Senior Ryan Rawnsley (Exeter, R.I.) started the run with a made layup at the 19:25 mark, while Jones capped it off with a shot from beyond the arc.

The Leopards took their first lead of the game (32-30) after sophomore Nico Donato (Glastonbury, Conn.) sank a three-pointer with 2:31 left in the first frame. With seven seconds on the clock, junior A.J. Stephens (Stamford, Conn.) made a layup to give Curry a one-point edge (34-33) heading into the break.

The Colonels took their biggest lead of the game (63-48) after junior Lambros Papalambros (Quincy, Mass.) converted a layup with seven minutes remaining in regulation. With 3:53 on the clock, Wentworth senior Corey Therriault (Auburn, Maine) sank a three-pointer to cut the deficit to eight (63-55). That was as close as the Leopards would come as Curry maintained a double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the game.

Jones made all four of his free throw attempts and shot 8-of-11 from the field, including three from beyond the arc to account for his 23 points. Papalambros added 18 points and dished out six assists, while junior Carlos Ribeiro (Charlestown, Mass.) scored 15. Stephens recorded a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Senior Colin Johnson (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) led Wentworth with 21 points. Sophomore John-Michael Fragnoli (Scotia, N.Y.) recorded a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double effort.

Both teams will host CCC quarterfinal contests on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. The first-place Colonels will face-off against #8 Western New England, while the third-seeded Leopards will play #6 Nichols.
