Jones Scores 32 Points to Lead Men's Basketball Past First-Place Salve Regina, 80-73

MILTON, Mass. – Junior Sedale Jones (Pittsfield, Mass.) poured in a game-high 32 points and went 12-for-12 from the line, leading Curry to an 80-73 win over visiting Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels improve to 10-11 overall and 8-6 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play, while the Seahawks fall to 13-8 overall and 11-3 in CCC action.

Salve Regina built its biggest lead of the game (24-15) with 10:19 left in the first half after sophomore Isiah Pringle (Queens, N.Y.) sank a shot from beyond the arc. Curry immediately responded with a 13-3 run capped off with layup and a free throw by Jones to take its first lead of the game (28-27) with 6:30 on the clock. After several ties, the Seahawks took a five-point lead heading into the break (45-40) after Pringle made another three-pointer with 1:04 remaining in the first period.

The Colonels opened the second frame with a 14-3 run, capped off with a layup by freshman Thomas McLean (Paxton, Mass.) to take a 54-48 lead with 13:48 left in regulation. With just over five minutes left on the clock, Curry extended its lead to 10 (66-56) after Jones sank a pair from the charity stripe. Salve Regina cut the deficit to three (74-71) with 43 seconds left after a pair of free throws by graduate Ryan Birrell (Hope, R.I.). The Colonels went on to hit 6-of-8 from the line and held the Seahawks to two points over the final 41 seconds to secure the victory.

Jones not only converted all of his free throw attempts, but also shot 9-of-15 from the field (60%). Junior A.J. Stephens (Stamford, Conn.) and senior Michael Connery (Narragansett, R.I.) chipped in with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Stephens also pulled down a game-high 15 boards to record the double-double.

Pringle led Salve Regina with a team-high 23 points, recording five three-point field goals. Birrell and junior William Smiley (Saunderstown, R.I.) added 16 points apiece. Smiley also recorded a double-double with a team-high 10 rebounds.

Both teams return to action on the road February 8, as Salve Regina visits Wentworth for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off, while Curry travels to Western New England for a 5:30 p.m. start.
