CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Five players finished in double-figures, including a career-high 16 points from Will Dickson, as the No. 15 ranked MIT men’s basketball team downed Curry College, 90-63, on Tuesday night in non-conference action. Will Tashman added a double-double for the Engineers, who jumped ahead early and never looked back on the way to the convincing win. Tech was able to bounce back from a narrow defeat on Saturday, improving to 2-1 on the season. Sedale Jones had an outstanding effort for the Colonels, who fall to 1-3 with the loss.
A pair of free throws brought the visitors within one, 8-7, just over three minutes into the game but, from there, MIT ran off 12 consecutive points to extend its lead to 20-7 midway through the first half. The swarming Tech defense forced six Curry turnovers during the spurt. Jones did his best to keep the Colonels close, scoring eight points in less than a minute to close the gap to nine. That momentum would be short live, however, as the Cardinal and Gray responded with an 18-2 run over the next 5:35. Freshman Tim Donegan had six points during that stretch to help the Engineers take a 23-points advantage into the locker room.
Curry came out strong to start the second half, scoring six-straight points to cut the deficit to 17 but that would be as close as the Colonels would get, as Will Tashman was able to stem the tide with a three-point play, just under three minutes into the period. The Tech lead would swell to as many as 32 en route to the 90-63 win.
Tashman finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double in as many games. He also added a team-high five assists. Dickson was very efficient, knocking down eight-of-12 shots in just 19 minutes of action. Mitchell Kates was MIT’s leading scorer with 19 points. Donegan (12) and Jamie Karraker joined them in double-digits on the evening.
Jones led all scorers with 26 points and also had a game-high 11 caroms. Jarrell Jackson scored 19 for the visitors and added five steals.
Tech held a 45-30 edge on the glass, including 11 on the offensive end, which led to 18 second-chance points. MIT also shot very well from the field, connecting on 51.7% of its attempts and knocking down 23 free throws.
MIT will be back in action on Saturday, November 27, traveling across the Charles river to take on Suffolk University at 2:00 p.m. Curry will host fellow New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe, WPI, next Tuesday, November 30 at 7:00 p.m. (Game recap courtesy of MIT Sports Information)
