SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior guard Philippe Jourdain (Cambridge, MA) had a double-double with 15 points and a game high 15 rebounds to lead the Curry men’s basketball team to a 67-56 victory over Western New England College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) opener for both
squads Saturday (Jan. 9) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center. The Colonels, who have won four of their last five contests, improve their record to 4-7 while the Golden Bears fall to 4-7 after suffering their second straight loss.
Jourdain was the difference making 7-of-11 shots from the field and pulling down 12 defensive boards while also dishing out six assists and blocking a pair of shots. Senior Mark Mastrullo (Billerica, MA) collected 13 points and had three-pointers with five steals. Sophomore guard Jarrell Jackson (Brockton, MA) had a nice game with 12 points and four rebounds off the bench.
Curry led 38-33 at halftime and built a 16-point lead twice in the second half, the last coming at 65-49 following a basket by junior guard Michael Worrick (North Grafton, MA) with 8:34 remaining. Western New England College played tough defense down the stretch allowing only a basket by Jourdain with 6:48 left. However, the Golden Bears couldn’t make up the difference netting only seven points, including just two in the final 7:26.
Sophomore guard Andre Shaw (Jamaica, NY) came off the bench and had a solid performance with a game high 17 points. He made 6-of-13 shots from the field, sank three three-pointers, and made both foul shots. Freshman guard Damon Alston (New Britain, CT) had his best game of the season with season highs of 11 points and five rebounds in a reserve role. Senior guard Rick Johnson (Springfield, MA) had nine points, all in the first half. Junior guard Chris Devine (Wilbraham, MA) added eight
points, nine rebounds, and four steals.
Curry shot a respectable 42.4% from the field and made all six charity shots while holding a 45-38 advantage off the boards. Western New England College again struggled with its shooting making
only 33.9% of its shots from the floor and only 4-of-12 foul attempts.
