Football Wins Thriller Against Nichols on 99-Yard Game-Winning Drive

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College pulled out a 48-46 comeback win over Nichols College on a 99-yard game-winning drive Saturday afternoon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference football game at Walter M. Katz Field.

Trailing by a score of 46-41, a well-placed punt by the Bison stuck the Colonels on their own one-yard line with only 1:36 remaining on the clock. A 31-yard pass from freshman quarterback Michael Moriarty (Rockland, Mass.) to his classmate Colin Ridley (Peabody, Mass.) started a nine-play, 99-yard drive that resulted in a game-winning five-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Pat Leary (Pembroke, Mass.), leaving only nine seconds remaining in the contest.

Curry's first score was a 10-yard rushing touchdown by sophomore quarterback Finn Sullivan (Newburyport, Mass.) with 4:08 remaining in the first quarter. The missed extra point put the Colonels behind by a score of 7-6.

The Colonels' offense exploded in the second quarter, starting with the first play of the period, a 72-yard rushing touchdown by Montie Quinn (Goose Creek, S.C.). Quinn would find the endzone again at the end of the quarter with another long run, this time a 47-yard score that put Curry on top 32-21 heading into halftime.

Moriarty had two passing touchdown passes in the second quarter. The first was a 47-yarder that landed right in the hands of freshman Lucas Leander (Rockland, Mass.) with 10:39 remaining in the half. The second touchdown arrived four minutes later as a nine-yard pass to Ridley gave the home team its first lead of the game, a 25-21 advantage.

Curry wouldn't score again until the fourth quarter, starting with a 39-yard field goal by junior Trevor Swanbeck (Dudley, Mass.) to retake a 35-32 lead for the Colonels. Quinn scored his third touchdown of the game, a one-yard rush, with 3:20 remaining in the quarter.

Moriarty finished with three touchdowns on 220 passing yards including a long of 47 yards. Quinn was the lead rusher for all players with 259 yards on 32 attempts for three touchdowns. Ridley was the top Curry receiver with 64 yards on five receptions and one touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball, Kurtees Poisson (Taunton, Mass.) led the Colonels with seven tackles. Michael Sims (Baltic, Conn.), Adem Kica (Oxford, Conn.), and Jolil Walker (Baltimore, Md.) all finished with six. Pete Jurovich (Winthrop, Mass.) finished with five tackles and a three-yard sack.

Curry College (3-5, 1-2 CCC) returns to action on Saturday (11/4) in a road matchup against Endicott College beginning at 12 p.m.
