Football Victorious Against MIT

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College defeated the MIT Engineers 20-16 in a competitive non-conference football game Saturday afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field.

Curry scored the first touchdown of the game when Dallas Murphy (Plymouth, Mass.) completed a 23-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Bowen (Mashpee, Mass.) who caught the ball in the right corner of the endzone. The touchdown capped off a nine-play, 87-yard drive to put the Colonels on top 6-0 with 3:58 remaining in the first quarter.

After MIT took a 9-6 lead the home team battled back, scoring on a 40-yard touchdown pass by Murphy on fourth and eight, once again connecting with Bowen for his second score of the game. Trevor Swanbeck's (Dudley, Mass.) extra point attempt was successful, putting the Colonels on top 13-9 with 6:15 remaining in the third quarter.

The Engineers scored again to take a 16-13 lead over Curry but the Colonels managed to put together an eight-play, 60-yard drive which was capped off by a three-yard touchdown run by Montie Quinn (Goose Creek, S.C.), putting the home team back on top, 20-16 early in the fourth quarter.

With the game on the line, the Curry defense stepped up with Pete Jurovich (Winthrop, Mass.) recording his second sack of the game to put the Engineers at second and 17 with under three minutes remaining in regulation. On third down, Jolil Walker (Baltimore, Md.) picked off a pass from MIT quarterback Chase Harmon for his second interception of the game to give possession back to the Colonels. Quinn ran for a first down allowing the home team to take a knee for the win.

Quinn led all rushers with 203 yards including a 57-yard run early on in the contest as well as one touchdown. Bowen finished with 104 yards on five receptions and two touchdowns. Murphy went 10-19 for 135 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 58 yards

Adem Kica (Oxford, Conn.) and Jurovich led the Colonels defensively with six tackles each while Jurovich had two sacks for a loss of 15 yards. Walker finished with five tackles and two interceptions while Rocco McNeil (Northbridge, Mass.) also had an interception.

The Colonels completed 24 first downs while going 11-18 on third-down situations. Curry finished with 284 yards rushing and 135 yards through the air.

Curry College (1-2) continues non-conference competition with a road contest against Utica on Saturday (9/23) beginning at 12 p.m.
