Football Prevails Over Hartwick in Defensive Battle

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College football team picked up its second straight win on Saturday afternoon, defeating Hartwick College by a final score of 14-7 in a non-conference showdown at Walter M. Katz Field.

With the win, Curry improves to 2-1 on the season, while Hartwick falls to 1-1.

The Hawks got on the board first with the only score of the first quarter, as Davien Kuinlan capped an 11-play, 60-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run to put the visitors ahead 7-0.

Midway through the second quarter, Curry responded with a score of their own when senior Justin Mullaney (Danvers, Mass.) found junior Gabe DeSouza (Everett, Mass.) all alone in the back left corner of the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown to even the score at 7-7.

With just over a minute to play before the break, Mullaney scored on a one-yard keeper to put the Colonels ahead 14-7, a score that would remarkably hold for the balance of the contest.

Hartwick threatened multiple times in the second half, but could never break through to level the score. Their best opportunity came on the very first play of the fourth quarter. With the Hawks facing third-and-goal to go on Curry's four-yard line, junior Kevin Peete (Boston, Mass.) intercepted Hartwick's Kyle Szokoli in the end zone to erase the chance and put the Colonels back in possession of the ball.

The Hawks got one final chance from the Curry 30-yard line and two seconds to play, but Kuinlan was flagged for an illegal forward pass that saw the clock run out.

Curry outgained Hartwick by a margin of 340-285 in the victory, paced by 301 yards through the air by Mullaney on 24 completions on 37 attempts. The Colonels held the visitors to just one third down conversion on 11 attempts, which proved to be the difference in the win.

DeSouza was Curry's leading receiver on the afternoon, pulling down six catches for 111 yards and the score. Kuinlan was Hartwick's top offensive threat, rushing the ball 20 times for 105 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, seniors Gregory Silvia (Coventry, R.I.) and James Nyamwaya (Andover, Mass.) led the way with 10 tackles each. Nyamwaya also recorded two quarterback hurries and 1.5 tackles for loss.

Curry will be off next weekend, but will look to keep the winning streak alive on the road in their CCC opener against Endicott on October 2.
