Football Drops League Contest to Western New England

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College football team dropped a 49-27 contest to Western New England University on Saturday afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field in CCC Football action. The win moves the Golden Bears to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The Colonels fall to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in league action.

Western New England got the first score of the game as they put together a nine-play, 67-yard drive which was capped off by an 11-yard rush by senior Jamyre Soberanis (Dorchester, Mass.) Classmate Kieran Lombard (Dover, N.H.) tacked on the extra point to make the score 7-0.

The Colonels pulled to within one before the end of the opening quarter as Curry engineered a 10-play, 61-yard series. Senior quarterback Nick Juvelier (Centereach, N.Y.) connected with freshman Gabriel Desouza (North Andover, Mass.) for a 17-yard strike to finish off the drive which spanned 2:51. Freshman Evan Damian (East Haven, Conn.) missed the point-after, which kept the score 7-6.

The Golden Bears started the second quarter with its second score of the day from Soberanis, this time off of a three-yard rush. Lombard split the uprights to push the lead to 14-6 to complete a seven-play series over 65 yards in 2:20.

The Colonels cut into the deficit quickly on the next drive as they drove 64 yards in five plays, capped off by a 24-yard pass from Juvelier to junior Zach Levy (Bellingham, Mass.). Damian tacked on the extra point to make the score 14-13.

The teams traded the final two scores of the first half. Soberanis found the end zone for the third time, this time off of a 24-yard scamper. Lombard was successful on the PAT to increase the lead to 21-13.

Curry kept the contest close as they scored right before the end of the quarter. Juvelier scored from four yards out on a rush to finish an eight-play, 39-yard drive. Damian's added the extra point as the Colonels entered the halftime intermission down by one, 21-20.

Western New England scored on three straight possessions in the third quarter to increase the lead to 42-20. Senior Alec Coleman (Arlington, Mass.) tossed a five-yard touchdown pass to junior Adam Razza (Watertown, Conn.) for the first score of the stanza. Following a turnover from the Colonels, the Golden Bears got the ball back and went 46 yards in six plays, capped off by a two-yard rush by freshman EJ Dudley (Meriden, Conn.). After a turnover on downs by Curry, the Golden Bears used four plays to find the end zone on a nine-yard rush by Coleman. Lombard pitched in the PAT to extend the lead to 22 points.

Western New England tallied its final score of the contest on the opening drive of the fourth quarter. Coleman connected with sophomore AJ Hall (Norwalk, Conn.) on a 16-yard pass to finish off a 13-play, 86-yard drive, while Lombard added the extra point to increase the lead to 49-20.

Curry tacked on its last points of the game on a nine-yard pass from Juvelier to freshman Jason Cambra (El Paso, Texas). Damian split the uprights to make the score 49-27, the eventual final.

The Colonels offense was led by Juvelier, who went 30-of-54 for 339 yards through the air with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Levy paced the Curry backfield with 40 yards on 12 rushing attempts. Desouza led all Curry receivers with 130 yards on eight catches and one touchdown. On the defensive side, the Colonels were led by freshman Joshua Gabbidon (Orlando, Fla.), who made 13 tackles (11 solo, three assisted) and sophomore James Nyamwaya (North Andover, Mass.), who finished with 10 tackles (three solo, seven assists). 

For Western New England, Coleman completed 31-of-41 pass attempts for 360 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Soberanis led the charge on the ground, rushing 17 times for 106 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Steven Fedorchak (Guilderland, N.Y.) was the leading receiver, hauling in 10 catches for 118 yards. Junior Tucker Hartmann (Anthem, Ariz.) registered 10 tackles (six solo, four assisted) to top the category for the Golden Bears.

Curry will next travel to Becker College on Saturday, November 2 for a noon kickoff for its next contest. Western New England returns to action when they host Endicott on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
