Football Falls 55-7 to Visiting NEFC Boyd Rival Endicott

MILTON, Mass. – Visiting Endicott scored 38 first-half points en route to a 55-7 win against Curry in New England Football Conference (NEFC) Boyd Division action Saturday night in Milton. The Gulls remained unbeaten at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in Boyd Division play. The Colonels fell to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Boyd action.

Endicott senior Phil Konopka (Shelton, Conn.) threw three touchdown passes in the first quarter, connecting with seniors Mike Fimiani (Melrose, Mass.) for 41 yards, Mike Lane (Medfield, Mass.) for 59 yards and Taylor Allen (Westboro, Mass.) from two yards out. Junior Mike Wheeler (Hanover, Mass.) capped off the Gulls’ first-quarter scoring on a three-yard touchdown run with 2:14 remaining to take a 28-0 lead.

Curry scored its only points of the night early in the second, capping off a six-play, 35-yard drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass from senior Mark Gilson (Mansfield, Mass.) to junior Bruce Vieira (Pelham, N.H.). Endicott responded on the following possession as Konopka tossed a 55-yard touchdown pass into the hands of junior Mike Murphy (Chelmsford, Mass.). Sophomore Dylan Rushe (Palos Verdes, Calif.) kicked a 41-yard field goal with 2:31 remaining to give the Gulls a 38-7 edge at intermission.

Halfway through the third, Endicott added seven more points with Konopka’s fifth and final touchdown pass of the game. In the fourth, Lane rushed four yards into the end zone for his second touchdown. With 5:42 left in regulation, Rushe booted a 55-yard field goal to account for the 55-7 final.

The Gulls racked up 652 yards of total offense, and held significant edges in first downs (22-13) and time of possession (35:55-24:05).

Konopka was 17-for-22 for 385 yards and five touchdowns. Lane led all rushers with 169 yards on 31 carries with one touchdown. Murphy reeled in seven receptions for 202 yards and a touchdown. Gilson was 8-for-12 for 99 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore Phil Bigelow (East Orange, N.J.) led the Colonels on the ground with 100 yards on 13 carries.

Endicott’s defense was led by senior Kevin Eagan (West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Andrew Lawson (Framingham, Mass.) with six total tackles apiece. Senior Chris Haddad (Bellingham, Mass.), junior Jason Genece (Waltham, Mass.) and sophomore Luke Soccorso (Foxboro, Mass.) each recorded eight total tackles for the Colonels.

Endicott returns to action next Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff at Nichols. Curry also hits the road for a 1:00 p.m. contest next Saturday at Western New England University.
