Football Cruises Past Fitchburg State 28-0 For Season's First Win
FITCHBURG, Mass. – Visiting Curry College cruised to a 28-0 win at Fitchburg State in a New England Football Conference (NEFC) non-divisional match-up at Elliot Field.

Sophomore wide receiver Robert Bambini (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) led the Colonels to their first victory of the season, hauling in a game-high 133 yards with six receptions and two touchdowns. Classmate Mark Gilson (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) was also strong behind center for Curry, throwing 9-of-21 for 158 yards and one TD, while senior running back Dennis Void (Brookhaven, Pa./Mount St. Michael) added 60 yards on the ground and one rushing score.

Fitchburg State mustered only 50 yards of total offense, as the Curry defense registered seven sacks and 12 tackles for loss. Quarterback Jeremy Kimber (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) felt the heat throughout the contest, finishing 12-of-23 for 58 yards, while the Colonels kept the Falcons receivers at bay for most of the game. Senior Darren Wilson (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) rushed 21 times for 72 yards, while adding three receptions for 17 yards.

Curry held a 14-0 lead at the break. The Colonels got on the board in the opening quarter, using a blocked punt to set up a four-yard touchdown run by Void. Freshman Chevere Archer (Lynn, Mass./Classical) got to punter Kyle Callahan (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) for the blocked kick, before classmate Jonas Duffrene (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) picked up the loose ball on the Falcons four-yard line.

Curry doubled its lead early in the second frame as freshman fullback Phil Bigelow (E. Orange, N.J./Bridgton Academy) plowed through the middle for a six-yard touchdown run. The Colonels capitalized on a Fitchburg State turnover, forcing a fumble on their own 26-yard line, and three plays later put the ball in the end zone for a two-touchdown advantage.

After a silent third quarter, Curry broke open the contest in the fourth, posting 14 more unanswered points for a commanding 28-0 lead. In the final frame, Bambini took over, hauling in a pair of touchdown catches for a combined 37 yards. The Colonels got on the board early into the frame as Bambini capped a five-play, 54-yard drive with a 28-yard reception from Gilson at the 14:53 mark. After a Falcons three- and-out, Curry struck again as junior quarterback Anthony Carnevale (Oradell, N.J./River Dell) hit Bambini on a nine-yard slant for the game’s final touchdown.

On the defensive side of the field, junior Patrick Hannon (Norton, Mass./Norton) led Curry’s effort, posing 4.5 tackles, 2.0 sacks and one interception, while Jason Genece (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) finished with a team-best 6.5 tackles, including four solo stops and five assists. Fitchburg State senior Anthony Bizzotto (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) led all tacklers with 9.0 stops (six solo, six assists), while junior captain Will Gasson (N. Falmouth, Mass./Mansfield) added five solo tackles, two assists and one interception.
