Fall 2010 Sports Previews

MILTON, Mass. - All six Curry College fall sports teams are gearing up for their 2010 campaigns:

Football is coming off its 12th-consecutive winning season and yet another Boyd Division Title. Over the past 12 seasons, Curry has compiled an impressive 105 wins to go with only 29 losses. With over 100 student-athletes arriving on campus on August 14 for pre-season camp, the Colonels expect to be as competitive and successful as ever.  The team opens up the 2010 season at home on Saturday, September 4 at 1:00 p.m. against Division II Stonehill College, before heading to Fitchburg State for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff on September 11.

Women’s Soccer has a very talented core of returning athletes, in addition to the largest-ever number of invitees to pre-season camp. The team’s chemistry will make for a successful season, and Head Coach Danielle Ferrara Toomey is hoping the newcomers will gel quickly with her upperclassmen. The Commonwealth Coast Conference remains a tough and competitive league, and the Colonels’ ultimate goal for the season is a conference championship. Each season brings new challenges and this year’s women’s soccer squad is ready and excited to take them on.

Men’s Soccer will have a new look this season as Head Coach Peter Mendel has brought in the biggest recruiting class in school history in hopes of competing for a TCCC Championship. In 2010, Curry will look to build on its recent success by combining a core group of returning players with a crop of very talented young newcomers. Expectations are high and it should prove be an exciting season. A tougher out-of-conference schedule should serve the Colonels well as they head into conference play.

Women's Cross Country opens its season on September 11 at the Mass. Maritime Invitational. With four returning athletes joined by eight new runners, the squad hopes to produce fast times during the 2010 campaign. Curry will be lead by senior co-captains Kendra Lapierre and Kimberly DeCosta. First-year Head Coach Jennifer Pearce, a former athlete at Elon University, hopes to guide the Colonels to a level of competitiveness this year within the TCCC. Her team will compete in five total meets before heading to the TCCC Championships at WNEC.

Women's Tennis missed the playoffs by one match last year. This year’s team will be led by senior co-captains Lauren Maloney and Courtney Sullivan. Seven new recruits will join five returning players for a squad size of 12. Two years ago, in Head Coach Richard Murray’s first season, the team had just six players. The recruits have considerable talent which will provide more depth and get the Colonels back into the playoff hunt. The squad will rely on the captains and upperclassmen to lead on and off the court as the new players adjust to college and competitive tennis.

Women’s Volleyball plays its first varsity season this fall. With over 30 players invited to pre-season try-outs, competition is expected to be high to earn a place on the team.  Challenges for this young team will be in developing a strong core relationship, individual growth and consistent execution of new offensive and defensive systems. This fall’s schedule will offer opportunities and challenges with tough competition including Southern Vermont, Mitchell College and Mount St. Mary College. The team expects to start out strong and finish stronger.
