Baseball Opens CNE Play With Win over Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Curry College split a doubleheader against Western New England University on Saturday afternoon at Trelease Park. The Colonels won game one 8-7 and lost the second 14-0.

With the split, Curry slides to an overall record of 5-6 on the season and opens up conference play with a 1-1 record.

GAME ONE: Curry 8, WNE 7

After five scoreless innings, the Colonels struck first in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Tino Gagliardi walked to reach first. On the ensuing at-bat, Tommy Marshall doubled to the gap in right-center field, driving in Gagliardi to give Curry a 1-0 advantage.

Western New England took a 3-1 lead over the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, but the Colonels' offense exploded in the eighth, scoring seven runs on six hits to take an 8-3 lead. Marshall, Reegan Thomas, and Devin Grove each had RBI singles in the inning, while Michael Desroches drove in a run after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. George Calderon walked a run in and Gagliardi had an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Marshall started on the mound for Curry, striking out ten batters while allowing zero earned runs through six innings. Mike Riordan closed out the game for the Colonels, picking up the save and earning Curry the win.

GAME TWO: WNE 14, Curry 0

After going 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored in the first game of the day, Marshall kept his stellar performance going in game two. The senior went 2-for-3 with a couple of singles. Calderon was the only other Curry batter to record a hit throughout the contest.

The Golden Bear's bats picked up in the second game of the doubleheader, scoring in five of the game's seven innings while the Curry pitching staff struggled to find their footing.

Curry College returns to action on Monday, March 24th, hosting Bridgewater at 3:30 p.m.
