Auburndale, FL - The Curry Baseball team fell in both games of their doubleheader on Tuesday, falling to Fontbonne 6-5, and Penn State Abbington 10-8. The Colonels are now 4-3 on the season.
Game One vs Fontbonne
The Colonels got on the board first with an RBI single from Tino Gagliardi in the first, but the Griffins tied things up in the bottom half of the inning on a balk. They'd add another run in each of the third and fourth innings to go up 3-1. The Colonels inched closer in the fifth with a run on an error, but Fontbonne scored a run in the sixth and seventh to go up 5-2. A run in the eighth gave the Colonels life, and they then rallied in the ninth. A single from Brandon Mantilla-Mercado made it 5-4, and then a groundout with the bases loaded tied the game at five. But the Griffins would respond in the bottom half of the inning, and win on a walk-off single.
Tommy Marshall, Tino Gagliardi, and Michael Desroches each had two hits for the Colonels. Michael Hutchko was handed the loss on the mound.
Game Two vs Penn State Abbington
Where game one saw each team score one run here, and then another run there, the second game the scoring came in bunches. Penn State scored three in the first, and went up 5-1 with two more in the fourth. The Curry bats came alive in the fourth, scoring seven runs. They were also helped by the Nittany Lions, as the first five runs of the inning came on an error, balk, and three wild pitches. Singles from Brandon Polanco and Devin Grove accounted for the other two runs. This put the Colonels up 8-5. But the Colonels were unable to hold onto the lead, as Penn State scored once in the sixth, and then four times in the seventh to go ahead by the final margin of 10-8.
All nine of the Colonels' hits were singles, with George Calderon, Brandon Polanco, and Devin Grove each getting two. Drew Fagala picked up the loss on the mound.
Up Next - After an off day on Wednesday, the Colonels will wrap up their Florida trip with a doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan beginning at 9am.
