Baseball Sweeps Elms in Florida Doubleheader

DAVENPORT, Fla. - Curry College continued its Florida trip with a pair of victories in a doubleheader against Elms College, winning game one 8-6 and game two 6-4 Sunday evening at Northeast Regional Park Field #2.

With today's games, the Colonels' overall record improves to 3-1 on the season.

GAME ONE: Curry 8, Elms 6

A pair of walks and two hit batters loaded the bases and scored a run in the top of the first for the Colonels. With the bases still loaded, Nick Krise slapped a double to the right-center gap, clearing the bases and giving Curry a 4-0 lead. Another double down the left field line by Devin Grove on the ensuing at-bat resulted in an additional run, ending the inning with a 5-0 Colonels lead.

Curry loaded the bases again in the second, setting up George Calderon who shot a single up the middle of the field to score a pair of runs and end the inning with the Colonels leading 7-0.

After Elms got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth, Marshall got the Curry bats going again, smashing a triple over the center fielder's head to set up Kyle Doolin who doubled to center, driving in the run and extending the Curry lead to 8-2.

Elms made a partial comeback in the bottom of the seventh, the final inning due to the doubleheader, loading the bases, and trailing 8-6 with two outs. Michael Hutchko took the mound to close, forcing a flyout to earn the save while Jack Keane picked up the win as the starter.

GAME TWO: Curry 6, Elms 4

In game two, Curry took advantage of a pair of errors by the Elms defense in the bottom of the second. With one out and runners on second and third, Michael Desroches hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing the run to score from third, tying the game at 1-1.

The third inning was eventful, with a leadoff walk, a single by Erik Leonard, and another walk loading the bases for Brandon Polanco who singled up the middle to bring in a second run for the Colonels. Later in the inning, a wild pitch allowed another runner to score, tying the game at 3-3. On the next at-bat, Calderon sent a sac fly to the outfield to score a fourth run and give the Colonels their first lead of the game while a balk by the pitcher extended the Curry lead to 5-3.

Desroches walked to lead off the bottom of the sixth and reached third on a failed pick off attempt by the pitcher, later scoring on a wild pitch to give the Colonels some breathing room with a 6-4 lead.

Hutchko took over pitching duties in the fifth, striking out two while allowing only one hit and zero runs in 2.2 innings pitched to earn his second save of the day. Kyle DeBoer earned the win as the starter, striking out seven batters while allowing just two earned runs through four innings.

Curry College plays the fifth game of its Florida game tomorrow, Monday, March 10th, in another showdown against a New England opponent, Albertus Magnus, first-pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
