
AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Curry College baseball opened the season and its Florida trip with a 9-2 victory over Saint Vincent College and a 14-3 loss to Keystone College in a pair of games at Lake Myrtle Park Sports Complex.
GAME ONE: Curry 9, St. Vincent 2
The Colonels came out the gate swinging, with back-to-back singles in the first inning from leadoff batter Tommy Marshall and Kyle Doolin to set up Aaron Siegal who singled to drive in a pair of runs. Curry kept the pressure on, with a Nick Krise single to right field that drove in another two runs to give the Colonels a 4-0 lead to end the inning.
A Michael Desroches walk to lead off the second inning set up Marshall, who doubled to the gap in left-center field to drive in another run and put Curry on top 5-0.
After a scoreless third, Curry put another pair of runs in the fourth, with back-to-back doubles from Marshall and Doolin each driving in a run to increase the advantage to 7-0.
Marshall continued his dominant performance in the sixth, hitting his second single to lead off the inning, making him 4-for-4 on the day and setting up Erik Leonard who hit an RBI single to score Marshall who had reached third on a single by Doolin. Doolin later scored on a sacrifice fly by Tino Gagliardi to score the Colonels' ninth and final run.
Marshall pitched five solid innings for the Colonels, allowing only three hits and one run while recording a pair of strikeouts. Drew Fagala came in to relieve at the start of the sixth, closing out the game without allowing an earned run.
Marshall and Doolin both finished 4-for-5 from the batter's box with three doubles and RBIs between them. Overall, the Colonels outhit their opponent by a margin of 15 to eight.
GAME TWO: Keystone 14, Curry 3
The Colonels first scored in the third inning in a unique situation involving Brandon Mantilla-Mercado who hit a two-run home run over the left field wall but failed to touch home plate on his way around the bases causing only one run to score. The Colonels tied the game at 2-2 when Michael Desroches scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.
Curry picked up another run in the bottom seventh when, with runners on first and second, Desroches knocked a double to the left-center gap, scoring the Colonels' third run of the game.
Curry College (1-1) continues its Florida games tomorrow, Sunday, March 9th, with a doubleheader against Elms College beginning at 4 p.m.
