Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Western New England

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College baseball was defeated in both games of a doubleheader against Western New England University Monday afternoon at Jack Valley Diamond. With the losses, the Colonels drop to an overall record of 3-19 and a Commonwealth Cost Conference record of 0-6.

GAME ONE: WNE 11, Curry 3

The Colonels didn't score until the bottom of the fourth inning when a pair of walks and a hit batter loaded the bases for Kyle Doolin (Stoughton, Mass.) who knocked a single to left field to put Curry on the board. Tino Gagliardi (Cromwell, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly on the ensuing at-bat to give the Colonels their second run of the inning.

Curry loaded the bases again in the bottom of the fifth, this time Aidan Finnegan (Amsterdam, Netherlands) grounded the ball to shortstop, reaching on a fielder's choice which allowed the Colonels' final run to score from third base.

GAME TWO: WNE 5, Curry 4

After trialing 1-0 for three full innings, the Colonels evened the odds in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back singles by Drew Fagala (San Antonio, Texas) and Cam Barry (Manchester, Conn.). Doolin then singled to second base to drive in a run and tie the score at 1-1.

Curry took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs off of three hits and an error by the Golden Bear defense. A throwing error by the catcher gave Curry a 2-1 lead and put a runner at third base, setting up Devin Grove (Cheshire, Conn.) who hit an RBI double to left field to extend the lead. Doolin picked up another RBI later in the inning to put the Colonels on top 4-1.

Fagala had a notable performance, going 4-for-4 on the game with four singles while managing to score once.

Dale Beneway (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) was effective on the mound for most of the game, allowing just one run through the first five innings of play while striking out six batters.

Curry College returns to action on Tuesday, April 16th, with a home game against the Saint Joseph's College of Maine beginning at 4 p.m.
