MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College baseball team emerged victorious in its 2022 home opener on Sunday afternoon, defeating Dean College 6-4 in non-conference action at Jack Vallely Diamond.
With the win, Curry improves to 5-3 overall on the season.
Curry scored at least once in every inning from the second until the sixth to account for all of its offense on the day. A Brandon Polanco (Brooklyn, N.Y.) RBI single in the bottom of the second opened the scoring, and Curry extended its lead to 2-0 on an RBI double from Conor Hanlon (Beverly, Mass.) in the third.
After Dean found the scoreboard in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout, sophomore Joan Peralta (Brooklyn, N.Y.) pushed the lead back to two by blasting a solo shot over the right centerfield fence in the bottom of the frame.
A two-run double in the top of the fifth by Dean's Ryan Gallagher briefly leveled the score, but run-scoring singles in the bottom of the inning by Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.) and James Jackson (Seekonk, Mass.) put the Colonels in the lead for good.
Curry added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a Ryan Goonan (Raynham, Mass.) RBI single, and was able to hold on for the victory.
On the bump, senior Jack Needham (Raynham, Mass.) was credited with the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts over five innings. Graduate student Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth and slammed the door shut in the top of the ninth to earn a four-out save. Coming out of the bullpen, senior Mike Mulrean (South Easton, Mass.) also impressed on the afternoon, throwing two shutout innings and striking out five of the seven batters he faced.
Offensively, Curry roped a season-high 14 hits in the win, with three each from Goonan and Peralta.
Next up for the Colonels, they will have a quick turnaround, playing Mass. Maritime at home on Monday afternoon. First pitch from Vallely Diamond is slated for 3 p.m.
