Baseball Takes Two from Becker

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College baseball team started its 2021 season against Becker College with 1-0 and 4-3 victories on Sunday afternoon at the Jack Vallely Diamond.

Game One: Curry 1, Becker 0

A pitcher's duel between senior Zachary Wensley (Raynham, Mass.) and Becker's Tevon Johnson (New Bedford, Mass.) stole the show in the first game of the doubleheader. Wensley struck out seven batters in 7.0 scoreless innings while Johnson allowed just one run on three hits while striking out seven.

The game's lone run came in the third inning as freshman Ryan Goonan (Raynham, Mass.) singled to short and advanced to second to get into scoring position. Senior Garrett Fosher (Exeter, N.H.) grounded out to move Goonan to third and junior Julian Jaume (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled up the middle to plate Goonan.

Wensley picked up his seventh career complete game victory on the hill.

Game Two – Curry 4, Becker 3

Becker went ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the top of the first. Noah Rivera scored the first run following an error by Goonan. Niko Mokanos (Montvale, N.J.) followed with a single to third to plate Ethan Perry (Dartmouth, Mass.). Bumpus later scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

Curry cut into the deficit in the fifth with two runs. After back-to-back walks to start the inning, senior Dylan Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.) delivered a double to center to score junior Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.) and Jaume.

Junior Jacob Bishop (Taunton, Mass.) began the inning with a double to left field and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Fosher got on by way of a walk and moved to second on a steal. After Jaume struck out, Leonard singled through the left side to send Fosher and Bishop home to take a 4-3 advantage, the eventual final.

Junior Nick Kavrakis (Southwick, Mass.) tossed 1.0 inning of scoreless relief to pick up the win. Senior Philip Ledwith (Old Saybrook, Conn.) tossed the first seven innings and fanned 10 batters. Freshman Aaron Diaz (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) picked up the save. Curry's pitchers held Becker to just four hits in the game.

Curry (2-0 overall) will open Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play at Salve Regina University on Saturday, March 27 in a doubleheader starting at noon. Becker (0-5 overall) travels to Salem State University to take on the Vikings in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
