MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College baseball team lost to non-conference opponent Emerson College by a 7-4 final on Thursday afternoon at Jack Vallely Diamond.
The Lions (7-24 overall) led from wire-to-wire erased and jumped on the board early in the first inning. Starting pitcher junior Jack Fox (Los Angeles, Calif.) gave Emerson a strong outing, tossing a complete game while striking out nine to improve to 5-4 on the season.
The Lions had the game's first chance to score in the top of the first inning. Freshman Louie Davoilo (Worcester, Mass.) was the contest's first base runner as he delivered a single up the middle. Two batters later, junior Cam Beattie (Gilbert, Ariz.) drove in Davolio with a double down the left field line. The visitors added to its lead in the third inning after McCahan reached on an error by Curry second baseman Riley Cronin (East Providence, R.I.). The miscue allowed freshman Josh Cohen (Corte Madera, Calif.) to score from second for a 2-0 lead.
The Colonels got on the board in the third. Senior Jack Kallinich (Madison, Conn.) contributed to the first run with a base knock to right field to plate sophomore Dylan Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.).
Emerson added to their advantage in the fourth. Cohen hit a sacrifice fly to center field to send junior Joe Paladino (Bedminster, N.J.) home from third. Davolio immediately followed with a single to the pitcher to score freshman Calvin Jacey (Mystic, Conn.) to grab a 4-1 lead.
Curry cut into the lead in the sixth with a single run off a sac fly to left field by freshman Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.). The fly ball was deep enough to score Kallinich to make the score 4-2.
The Lions kept the pressure on by adding two in the seventh. Davolio reached on an error by the center fielder, which allowed Cohen to cross home. Beattie drove in the final run of the frame off a sacrifice fly by Beattie, scoring Davolio from third to push the lead to 6-2.
The Colonels trimmed the deficit to three in the eighth after Leonard hit a two-bagger to center to bring around Cronin.
The teams then traded runs in the ninth. Beattie hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate Davolio and then Cronin drew a walk for the Colonels. The final pitch of the at-bat was a wild pitch, which allowed senior Spencer Cookson to score for the 7-4 final.
Curry freshman starter Joseph Sorrento (Danvers, Mass.) threw 3.2 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits.
Davolio, McCahan, Beattie, Paladino, and Padovani each had two hits for Emerson. Four Colonels registered one hit each to close out the column.
Curry is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, April 20 at home for a conference doubleheader against Western New England University beginning at 11:00 a.m. Emerson will next host Babson on Friday, April 19 at 2:00 p.m.
