MILTON, Mass. – The offenses took some time to get going this afternoon, but it was the Babson Beavers who came out on top of the Curry College baseball team by a final score of 10-7. With the win, the #19 Beavers move to 12-2, while the Colonels sink to 5-9-1.

Babson got the scoring started as Brian McHale (Ramsey, N.J.) scored on a ground out to first after leading off the game with a walk. In the following inning, the Beavers put another tick on the scoreboard, as a two-out double by Connor Gill (Sterling, Mass.) drove home Nicholas Browne (Mount Laurel, N.J.). Babson pitcher Nate Carpenter (Groveland, Mass.) was rolling in his first start of the season, carrying a no-hitter into the fourth. Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.) roped a single into left to break up the bid, but the Colonels remained scoreless through the end of the frame. In the top of the fifth, Jake Oliger (Newtown, Conn.) gave his wing an insurance run with a two-out homer to dead center, before an error gave the Beavers an extra out on a grounder, which should have ended the inning. After a double and a hit batter loaded the bases, still with two down, Alex DiMartino (Mahwah, N.J.) sent a single through the left side, which scored a pair of unearned runs. Curry reliever Nick Kavrakis (Southwick, Mass.) induced a grounder to end the inning after surrendering the hit, but the Colonels entered the bottom half of the fifth trailing 5-0. The bats finally woke up, however, sparking a rally to take their starter off the hook. After being held scoreless over the previous 13 offensive innings, a walk and a pair of singles kicked things off for Curry, leading to a two run single off the bat of Julian Jaume (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to get the hosts on the board. After Babson marched out a new pitcher, the Colonels capitalized on the momentum as Evan Leveroni (Sandown, N.H.) doubled into left to score Jaume and put the tying runs in scoring position. A batter later, Keller collected his second hit of the day with a shot up the middle to score both runners. The junior would be stranded on first, but Curry was looking at a whole new ball game with the score knotted at five.

Heading into the sixth, Philip Ledwith (Old Saybrook, Conn.) took over on the hill for the Colonels, but Babson was looking to regain the edge they lost. Three hits in the inning pushed two men across the plate to retake the lead, before three more hits in the seventh brought in just as many runs in the frame. Facing a 10-5 deficit, the Curry bats once again hit a roadblock, mustering just a pair of hits over the next three innings, allowing the Beavers to put up a few more zeroes. As the ninth inning rolled around, the Colonels looked to pull a rabbit out of a hat, as a pair of doubles drove in a pair of runs and created base runners, but a 4-3 ground out killed the rally just as quickly as it began and secured the Babson victory by a score of 10-7.

Despite the loss, Keller had a hand in Curry's offensive rebirth, going 4-for-5 with a double and three runs driven in. Jaume also registered a multi-hit day for the Colonels with a 2-for-5 performance out of the top spot in the lineup, posting three RBI and scoring two runs of his own. Gill (3-for-5) and DiMartino (3 RBI) topped Babson's side of the scoresheet while their balanced offense got a pair of hits each from Thomas Lapham (Charlestown, Mass., 2-for-4), Matthew Valente (Wyckoff, N.J., 2-for-4), Eric Jaun (Loveland, Ohio, 2-for-5,), and Oliger (2-for-5). Ben Aleixo's (North Smithfield, R.I., 1-1) two thirds of an inning were enough to earn the win, despite surrendering the tying run in the fifth. Ledwith moves to 0-1 on the year with the loss after giving up five earned over 1.2 frames. Curry reliever Joe Wallace walks away empty-handed in the loss, despite shutting down the Beaver offense over the final two and a third to give his offense a chance to mount a late come back.

The Colonels have a day off from games tomorrow before travelling to Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Endicott for an afternoon double header. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 30. Babson also gets back on the diamond on Saturday, as they continue a six game road trip with a pair of games at the Coast Guard Bears. The NEWMAC action will get underway at 12:00 p.m.
