BRISTOL, R.I. – The Curry College baseball team picked up a conference sweep of Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon at Paolino Field. The Colonels took game one by a 5-3 final and then capped the sweep with a 7-1 victory in the nightcap. With the wins, Curry moves to 11-15 overall and 7-3 in the CCC. The losses drop the Hawks to 10-22 overall and 3-7 in league play. With the game one victory, Curry head coach Dave Perdios recorded his 300th career victory.
GAME ONE
Curry got on the board first, thanks to an RBI double to right center by Justin Cage (Glendora, Calif.). The two-base hit plated Alex McLean to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead.
Curry would tack onto their lead in the second after Adam Duarte (East Providence, R.I.) reached on an error by Roger Williams pitcher Jimmy Smith (Walpole, Mass.). The error allowed Tyler Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) to cross home to go up 2-0. Cage then followed that play with a groundout to the pitcher, which sent Matt Fogarty (Millis, Mass.) home to tally another run.
The Colonels scored one run apiece in the next two innings to go up 5-0. Jenkins hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Cage and then McLean singled to left in the fourth to score Fogarty.
The Hawks would pull to within two in the bottom of the seventh with just one swing of the bat. Chris Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) crushed a three-run bomb to score Dan McClellan (Tolland, Mass.) and Shane Nowak (Litchfield, N.H.). The comeback bid would fall short as Curry took game one by a 5-3 final.
McLean and Cage led the Colonels with two hits apiece. Five others registered hits for Curry. Bosco and Bryan Terzian (Westport, Conn.) paced Roger Williams with two hits each.
David Griffin (Hanover, Mass.) picked up the win on the hill for the Colonels. He tossed a complete game whie allowing three runs on seven hits. He struck out eight and walked only three to earn his third win of the season. Smith was credited with the loss. He went the distance and gave up five run on nine hits while striking out one and walking two.
GAME TWO
Curry continued their strong offensive day in game two, tallying seven runs on 13 hits to take game two by a 7-1 final.
The Colonels struck first in the top of one when Michael Moreau (Marshfield, Mass.) singled up the middle to plate McLean and then later in the frame Moreau crossed home after Cage reached on an error by Tyler Brett (Hebron, Conn.) to put the visitors up 2-0.
Curry added to its lead in the second, thanks to an RBI single to center by McLean, which sent John Cave (Tewksbury, Mass.) home. Cave would later show up at the plate and single home Fogarty to make it a 4-0 game.
Fogarty chipped in a two-run double down the left field line to score Nick Crivello (Millville, Mass.) and Cage in the fifth and then Duarte capped the scoring with a one-run single up the middle to score Mitchell Carvalho (Cranston, R.I.) to cap the scoring in the seventh.
Roger Williams got on the board in their half of the seventh when Matt Converse singled up the middle to score Eli Camner (Hamden, Conn.) to tally the Hawks' lone run as they would fall 7-1 in the nightcap.
McLean paced the Colonels with three hits in the nightcap. Carvalho, Fogarty and Cave each recorded two hits apiece. Five Roger Williams student-athletes had one hit apiece for the home team.
Brian Burke (Swampscott, Mass.) registered the win on the mound for Curry. He went seven inning, only surrendering one run on five hits while striking out six and walking just two. Jimmy Hamilton (Schenectady, N.Y.) was credited with the loss as he went four and a third innings. He gave up six runs on eight hits while only striking out one batter.
Curry returns to the field on Sunday for a conference doubleheader at home against Nichols beginning at noon. Roger Williams will next play on Sunday for a road doubleheader at Western New England starting at noon.
