Baseball Tops Dean in Non-Conference Play, 10-4

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College baseball team picked up a 10-4 non-conference victory over visiting Dean College on Monday afternoon at the Jack Vallely Diamond. The win moves the Colonels to 9-14 while the Bulldogs slip to 12-13 on the year with the loss.

Dean got on the board in the top of the first by way of a Daniel Blazejewski (Stewartsville, N.J.) single through the right side to score John Cerretani (Salem, N.H.) to go up 1-0.

Curry answered back in their half of first frame with a sacrifice fly from Vincent LoPriore (Boston, Mass.). The fly ball to center was deep enough to score Alex McLean (Eliot, Maine) from third to tie the contest up at one.

The Colonels broke the tie game up in the third, tallying three runs on four hits. LoPriore singled up the middle to score Jack Kallinich (Madison, Conn.) to record run number two. Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.) kept the frame going when he reached on an error by the Dean second baseman, which allowed Matt Fogarty (Millis, Mass.) to score to grab the 3-1 advantage. Curry tacked on one more on another sacrifice fly, this one by Tyler Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) to right field that was deep enough to send LoPriore home to give the Colonels a 4-1 lead.

Curry increased its lead by one in the fourth, thanks to Kallinich scoring on a wild pitch to go up 4-1.

The strong offensive day continued for the Colonels, as they put up a four spot in the top of the seventh to increase the lead to eight run (9-1). McLean got things started in the inning with an RBI single to center to score John Cave (Tewksbury, Mass.) LoPriore later pitched in a two-RBI through the left side to plate Kallinich and McLean. Keller capped the scoring in the frame with a single to center, which sent Fogarty home.

Dean responded in their half of the seventh to put three runs on the board. Blazejewski opened the inning's scoring with an RBI double to right to score Christopher Wood (Berkley, Mass.). Retsyn Ooton (Barrington, R.I.) continued the frame with a two-run single up the middle to plate Blazejewski and Conor Callery (Lowell, Mass.) to pull the Bulldogs to within five at 9-4.

Curry would add an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Cave doubled down the left field line to score Adam Duarte (East Providence, R.I.) to give the Colonels the 10-4 victory.

Four Colonels (McLean, Fogarty, LoPriore, Cave) paced the home team with two hits each. LoPriore also registered a game-high four runs batted in. Wood, Callery and Blazejewski paced Dean with two hits apiece. Blazejewski and Ootton led the visitors with two runs batted in each.

Fogarty picked up the win on the hill for Curry, tossing four innings while giving up one run on two hits. He struck out four and walked two for his third victory of the year. Matt Hailey (Weymouth, Mass.) picked up a three out save for the Colonels, striking out two and only giving up one hit.

Curry returns to action on Thursday for a single game at Suffolk at 4:00 p.m. Dean will return home Wednesday to host Eastern Nazarene in a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
