Milton, Mass. – The Curry College baseball team outlasted Suffolk University on their way to a 15-14 non-conference win Friday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels improve to 9-19 while the Rams fall to 22-9 on the season.
The scoring was opened in the top of the second with Suffolk grabbing a trio of runs but Curry responded right away in their half of the inning. Freshman Matt Fogarty (Millis, Mass.) led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a ground out. Sophomore Anthony Sciaudone singled in Fogarty and came all the way around on senior John Arens' (Milton, Mass.) double to centerfield. Freshman Jack Kallinich (Madison, Conn.) traded places with Arens to even the score at three going into the third.
Fogarty started things with a double again in the third inning and would eventually score on sophomore Will de la Cruz's (Bronx, N.Y.) single to center. The Colonels would grab more runs in the next inning however, to extend their lead.
R.J. McCann stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and delivered a single to score Arens to start opening up the lead. Both de la Cruz and freshman Ben Lary (Kennebunk, Maine) were hit with pitches to bring in runs and Sciaudone followed with a bases clearing double to put the score up to 10-3 after four full innings.
Suffolk's bats woke up in the top of the fifth and they rallied to take the lead by a run after registering eight runs on as many hits to make the score 11-10. The Colonels wouldn't let them have the lead for that long as McCann doubled in junior Alex McLean (Elliot, Maine) who doubled to get on himself. Fogarty followed with a three-run homerun to put Curry up 14-11 after five full.
The Colonels scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh when Kallinich singled in Lary who singled earlier himself. It would prove to be an important insurance run as the Rams knocked a three-run homerun of their own to come to within a run of Curry in the top of the ninth. Freshman Brandon Bercovitz (West Bridgewater, Mass.) came in with only one out to preserve the 15-14 score to make it final.
Senior Kyle Connors (Stoughton, Mass.) earned the win after three and two-thirds innings pitched, yielding four runs, only three earned, on eight hits while fanning five. Junior Wyatt Stanley (Placentia, Calif.) was handed the loss after he gave up four earned runs on eight hits while striking out a batter.
The Colonels return to action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Eastern Nazarene College for a Noon start to their Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader. Suffolk will host conference opponent Johnson & Wales on Saturday as well, with their doubleheader starting at 4:30 p.m.
