Curry Splits Conference Doubleheader with Wentworth Winning 6-1 and Falling in the Night Cap 4-0

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College split a conference doubleheader, winning the first game by the score of 6-1 and dropping the second game 4-0.

Game One:

In the first game of a doubleheader against the Wentworth Leopards, Curry College bested the Leopards 6-1 in conference baseball action Saturday afternoon in Milton.

Wentworth jumped out to an early one run lead in the bottom of the first inning with Junior Jordan Burst (Jackson, N.J.) singling in junior Christian Ferri (Bloomfield, N.J.). The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the third when the Colonels jumped on the board.

The bottom of the third was started after Alex McLean (Elliot, Maine), Phillip Perez (West Covina, Calif.) and Nick Crivello (Millville, Mass.) drew walks from Leopards pitcher Zack Bernier (North Dartmouth, Mass.). William De La Cruz (Brox, N.Y.) drew another walk tying the game 1-1.

The Colonels increased their lead in the bottom of the fourth after a single by Kyle Connors (Stoughton, Mass.) started the inning. John Arens (Milton, Mass.) reached on an error by shortstop Jimmy Temte (Northborough, Mass.). Colonels junior McLean singled to drive in a run.

The bottom of the fifth was a big inning for the Colonels, driving in four runs. Crivello started things off by doubling to center field. A bunt hit by De La Cruz moved the runner to third base where freshman Ben Lary (Kennebunk, Maine) drove in the runner. De La Cruz later advanced on a passed ball by catcher Jake Smith (Orange, Conn.). A groundout by Connors gave the Colonels a 5-1 lead, and a RBI single for McLean capped off the 6-1 victory for the Colonels.

Curry pitcher David Griffin (Hanover, Mass.) had ten strikeouts, allowing 6 hits with no earned runs. The stellar performance by Griffin improves Curry's overall record to 6-10, and 1-0 in conference play.

Game Two:

In game two against the Leopards, Curry fell 4-0. There was a pitchers duel between Curry freshman Matt Fogerty (Millis, Mass.) and Wentworth sophomore Tyler Weninger (Chandler, Ariz.) The game remained scoreless until the top of the seventh when Wentworth got on the board. A double to left field by Johnny Ryan (Brant Rock, Mass) started it off for the Leopards. Temte reached on an error by third baseman Ben Lary, allowing Temte to score.

Freshman pitcher Matt Fogarty (Millis, Mass) had two down in the inning, but gave up a double and a single back to back. This increased the Leopards lead to 3-0. The final run of the game came on asingle to give Wentworth a 4-0 lead. Fogerty finished off the game allowing 5 hits, with 6 strikeouts, and 4 unearned runs.

Wentworth will continue their season tomorrow April 10th with a doubleheader against Nichols in Dudley, Mass. The Leopards improved their record to 6-11 overall with a 1-1 record in conference wins after winning the second game of the doubleheader against the Colonels.

The Colonels record now stands at 6-11 with a 1-1 record in conference games. The Colonels will continue their season tomorrow April 10th , playing a doubleheader against conference opponent Salve Regina in Newport R.I.
