HARWICH, Mass. – Senior Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, N.C.) went 2-for-4 with a home run and all three RBI and junior Alan Wang (Paoli, Pa.) twirled a six-hit shutout as both paced fifth-seeded MIT to a 3-0 triumph over seventh-seeded Curry this afternoon on the third day of the NCAA Division III New England Baseball Regional at Whitehouse Field.
The Engineers (27-13) move ahead to the second elimination game of the day to play second-seeded Wesleyan at 7:45 PM. The Colonels, who secured their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory on Thursday in the program's second appearance in the national playoffs, see their season come to an end at 24-15.
After freshman Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) reached on a one-out single, Tew followed with an RBI double to center, which gave MIT the early 1-0 edge in the bottom of the first.
With sophomore John Drago (Peoria, Ariz.) standing on first two innings later, Tew stroked the first pitch he saw into left field for a two-run blast to give the Cardinal and Gray the 3-0 margin. Drago jump-started the frame with a clean solo knock to left.
Facing the early three-run deficit, Curry senior Thomas Fitzpatrick (South Boston, Mass.) kept his squad in the game as he held MIT scoreless in his final five innings of work.
Fitzpatrick (6-3) surrendered three earned runs over his eight innings, ringing up seven on strikes while not issuing a free pass.
Curry had a hard time figuring out Wang, who was solid on the mound for the Engineers as he did not allow a batter to get past third base for the duration of the contest.
The Colonels' best chance was in the top of the first when freshman Evan Morris (Pembroke, Mass.) singled with two outs and Wang hit junior Philip Perez (West Covina, Calif.), however, he ended the threat with a groundout.
Wang (7-1), who hurled his first complete game of the campaign, fanned five and walked one batter. His only other career shutout was a seven-inning, one-hit victory, last year on April 14 against Curry in a 14-0 regular-season win.
Reiser was also 2-for-4 with a double to start off the seventh while Perez and sophomore Nick Crivello (Millville, Mass.) each notched two singles apiece to lead the Colonels. (Recap courtesy of the ECAC)
