Baseball Earns a Split with CCC Rival Nichols After an 8-7 Come-From-Behind Win in the Nightcap

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College rallied from a 7-3 deficit in the nightcap to prevail 8-7 and earn a split of a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) baseball doubleheader with Nichols College Wednesday afternoon in Milton. The Bison won the opener, 3-2.

The Colonels opened the scoring in game one in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by junior Tanner Givens (Hamden, Conn.). Nichols struck back with a pair in the bottom half of the inning as sophomore Joseph Nicolace (Cranston, R.I.) doubled to center to plate senior Shayne McNally (Auburn, Mass.) and freshman Benjamin Harrow (North Reading, Mass.).

Curry tied the game at two in the fifth when junior Matt Warren (Wilbraham, Mass.) doubled to right to score Givens. Junior Brett Franciosi's (Leominster, Mass.) RBI double in Nichols half of the inning brought home the eventual game-winning run as Nicolace walked home from third.

Senior Tyler Shute (Mashpee, Mass.) scattered three hits and allowed two runs in six innings to earn his first win of 2014. He walked two and struck out five. Freshman Brian Burke (Swampscott, Mass.) took the loss for the Colonels as he allowed six hits and three runs in his four innings of work.

Curry put up a '3' spot in the top of the first in game two behind a two-run single from sophomore Philip Perez (West Covina, Calif.). The Bison answered with seven runs in the third, sparked by a two-run single by Franciosi and an RBI single from freshman Jeff Sylvester (Berlin, Conn.).

The Colonels got two back in the fourth, then scored once in the sixth and twice in the seventh to move in front, 8-7. Freshman Cam Douglas (Milford, N.H.) stroked an RBI double in the fourth, followed by an RBI single off the bat of junior R.J. McCann (Brockton, Mass.).

After scoring an unearned run in the sixth, Curry sophomore Tim Lathrop (Colchester, Conn.) tied the game at seven with a run scoring single in the seventh. Later in the frame, junior Derek Pizarro's (Cambridge, Mass.) RBI groundout plated the eventual winning run.

Freshman Vincent LoPriore (Boston, Mass.) tossed a perfect sixth inning to earn the win for the Colonels. Junior Chris Kingsley (Middleboro, Mass.) got the start on the bump for Curry and allowed three runs (two earned) in two innings. Freshman Adam Rigney (Niantic, Conn.) was the hard luck loser for the Bison as he allowed two hits and a pair of unearned runs in 1.2 IP.
