Baseball Drops a Pair at Salve Regina to Open Conference Schedule

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Curry College baseball team opened its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) schedule with a pair of losses at Salve Regina. The Seahawks won the opener, 21-2 then captured the nightcap, 5-3. The Colonels saw their record dip to 5-8 overall and 0-2 in CCC play. Salve Regina improved to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in league action.

In Game One, Curry got singles in second and the sixth innings, on an RBI groundout by freshman Taylor Armstrong (Gilbert, Ariz.), and a run-scoring base hit by sophomore Tim Lathrop (Colchester, Conn.). Junior Tanner Givens (Hamden, Conn.) posted the visitor's only multi-hit game of the contest.

Freshman starter Ben Carrasco (San Francisco, Calif.) lasted only 1 1/3 innings, absorbing the loss to see his record fall to 2-2.

In Game Two, the Colonels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. The runs came via an RBI base hit by sophomore Philip Perez (West Covina, Calif.) and a lineout to centerfield by junior Matt Warren (Wilbraham, Mass.) that brought home freshman Alex McLean (Eliot, Maine).

The Seahawks took the lead right back, plating three runs off of Curry junior starter Thomas Fitzpatrick (South Boston, Mass.) in the bottom half of the inning.

The Colonels knotted the game at 3-3 in the second thanks to RBI double by junior R.J. McCann (Brockton, Mass.). Fitzpatrick kept the Salve Regina offense at bay until the bottom of the sixth, when the hosts scored a pair to take the 5-3 lead.

Fitzpatrick (1-2) picked up the defeat despite tossing all six innings. He surrendered six hits, one walk and three earned runs while striking out six.

The Colonels resume play on Tuesday, traveling to Bridgewater State for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference contest.
