NEWPORT, R.I. – The Curry College Baseball team took both ends of a doubleheader at Salve Regina by scores of 9-0 and 9-7 during a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader at Brother Reynolds Field. With the two losses, the Seahawks drop to 12-22 overall and 4-8 during CCC play, while the Colonels improve to 13-18 on the season, including a 9-3 conference mark.

Sophomore Tyler Colby (Easton, Conn.) had a team-high four hits on the day for the Seahawks, while senior Matt Capone went 3-for-7 with three runs scored in the double-dip. Sophomore Nicholas Dell Anno (Reading, Mass.) went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI's in the nightcap, while junior Nicholas Gaj (Pawtucket, R.I.) finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Junior Matt Rodriguez (Quincy, Mass.) had a monster day at the plate for the Colonels, going 4-for-7 with two home runs, three runs scored, and five runs driven in, while senior Matt Drew (Waltham, Mass.) tossed a complete-game shutout to earn the win during the opener.

Senior David Stevens (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Matt O'Neill (Milton, Mass.) both went 3-for-7 with two runs scored and three runs batted in, while freshman Matt Warren (Wilbraham, Mass.) had a four-hit afternoon.

The Colonels grabbed an early 2-0 lead in game one, scoring single runs in both the second and third innings, including an RBI single by Rodriguez. Still leading 2-0 after four full innings, the Colonels opened things up with three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth, and two more in the seventh.

That was more than enough for starter Mat Drew who went the distance for the complete game shutout. Drew scattered eight hits over seven strong innings, striking out six without issuing a single free pass.

In the nightcap, Rodriguez quickly put the Colonels on top with a two-run blast in the top of the first.

The Seahawks answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, receiving an RBI double by Dell Anno to tie the score at two.

The Colonels reclaimed the lead in the top of the second, as O'Neill delivered a two-run single to put Curry on top 4-2.

The Seahawks responded by scratching across a run in the second, before Dell Anno tied the score at four on an RBI single up the middle to bring home Colby in the third.
Curry struck back with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, receiving a run scoring double from sophomore Brandon Lewis (Barrington, R.I.) and an RBI single by O'Neill to grab a 6-4 lead.

The runs kept coming, as the Seahawks countered with three runs in the bottom half of the frame, including an RBI double by Capone who then came around to score on a single by Colby to give Salve Regina a 7-6 advantage.

In the top of the sixth, the Colonels tied the game when an errant throw on a stolen base allowed O'Neill to scamper home from third. Rodriguez followed with his second home run of the contest, belting what turned out to be a game-winning two-run blast to put the Colonels on top 9-7.

Freshman Michael Musser (Greenwhich, Conn.) held the Seahawks in check the rest of the way, allowing just one hit over 3.1 innings to seal the 9-7 victory.

Both teams return to action with CCC doubleheaders on Monday at 2 p.m., with the Colonels hosting Endicott and the Seahawks welcoming Gordon. (Recap courtesy of Salve Regina Sports Information)
